Employment Agencies and Third Party Recruiters

To be a wise consumer of employment agencies and third party recruiters, you’ll want to educate yourself on the services provided, the company’s corporate client connections, the types of positions offered by the company, the fees charged to you (if any), and the contract you would be expected to sign (if there is one). Many of these companies provide their services free to candidates and derive their revenue from employer fees, but you’ll want to be sure to ask. Some examples of when temporary work can be an excellent option:

• You haven’t found a position as soon as you had hoped and need to make some money. Temporary work can be a good way to make money, gain experience, and network while you continue to seek full-time "permanent" employment.
• You are uncertain on your career choice and want to explore some possibilities.
• You want to gain some skills and experience before applying for full-time "permanent" employment.
• You don’t want or need a full-time job.
• You plan to go to graduate school or begin a volunteer assignment in a few months, but need to earn some money in the meantime.
