Please give a brief description of your current position and where you're working.
Since December 2008, I have been a field sales representative for BNA. I sell legal notification and reference information to tax, human resource and general counsels in the Twin Cities.
What path did you follow to arrive at your current job?
I networked during my senior year with people I knew. I also attended the MN Private College Job Fair and participated in interviews with companies such as Best Buy. I was offered a position with Best Buy but chose to accept a sales job at a small IT consulting company. I initially found out about this position through my networking activities.
I continued to network and after a year left for a position in Inside Sales at Thomson West. I was an inside sales rep for one year and then moved into a management position for four and half years. I left for a field sales role in December. I needed a new challenge and BNA is a partner with Thomson.
What advice/suggestions would you have for students who might be interested in your career?
Talk to people, learn and work on ways to implement the sales process into jobs you are doing now.
What skills are important in your field?
Sales process, self-motivated, able to communicate effectively verbally and in the written form, not afraid of rejection.
What activities/experiences were helpful at CSB/SJU (and elsewhere) in preparation for this career?
Have a job; anything is better than nothing. I was a student manager at the bookstore and obtained great experience.
What is the most satisfying/rewarding part of your job?
I own my day, my financial destiny and I get to interact with a variety of people every day!
