Intern name: Max Forster
Major (s): Management
Title: Digital Intern
Place of internship: Mediaspace Solutions
How did you find out about the internship and what was the application process like?
I happened to know one of the guys that worked at the company and we set up an informational interview over winter break. There are actually a few Johnnies that work at Mediaspace and they were the ones who led the informational interview. The informational interview outlined what Mediaspace did and tips they had for pursing a career and finding a job. After the informational interview I followed up and continued to keep in contact with company. They contacted me in early spring to come in for another interview where it was more formal and we discussed what I would be helping them with during the summer.
What were some of the internship highlights?
I learned so many new things at Mediaspace. On top of the newly acquired skills the main thing that stood out to me at Mediaspace was the company culture. I had never seen a workplace like the one at Mediaspace. Everyone knew each other personally and the level of communication I witnessed at the company was second to none. I learned a lot about the advertising industry and what really is behind ad space on all platforms (magazines, newspapers, online, tablets and mobile). There is a pub room in the office where employees would gather for lunch and on Friday's to just hang out. I could honestly say that I looked forward to going to work every day. I doubt many people can say that about their job.
What was a typical day like? What were some of your major responsibilities?
I worked under the Digital Director of the company and the job that she held was constantly throwing new things her way. I never had a "typical" day at Mediaspace. Every day was something new and different. I had the label of being the Digital Intern, but I actually helped out every department of the company. There was never a dull day for me at Mediaspace. Some of the responsibilities that I had included building a new database for the company, creating marketing strategies for clients, and researching specific competitors ads for clients.
What were some of the challenges of your internship?
I wouldn't say that there were that many challenges for me because of how welcoming and helpful every employee at the company was. No one was ever too busy to help explain something to me or to even talk to. One challenge was getting used to using Microsoft Excel. I knew the basics of Excel, but the program is an everyday necessity at Mediaspace. I got several lessons from the employees and by the end of the summer I was very comfortable and good at Excel.
What did you learn?
I learned how important strong communication is with your fellow employees. If there is good communication between everyone in the company it allows everyone to get the most out of one another and highly benefit the business. I learned many skills involving the ad industry, including the tools that are used to research and project outcomes for clients. Every day was a continuous learning experience and I am very thankful for the Mediaspace employees for making my experience tremendously enjoyable and worthwhile.
What advice would you give other students interested in internships?
You really should try to go above and beyond when you are applying places. There are so many people out there that are doing the same as you and applying for internships. Companies are trying to find the person that stands out and is willing to go the extra mile for them. If you are able to show and prove to a company that you are different from all of those other people then you are setting yourself up for success.
