Making career decisions can seem overwhelming and confusing, especially if you do not have relevant information about the occupation such as education and training needed, job responsibilities, typical earnings, necessary skills, job outlook and working conditions. Reading about occupations is the first step in becoming acquainted with the possibilities. Next, it's helpful to actually spend some time talking with a professional in that field (informational interview) and having some time to "shadow" them to observe their environment and job duties to determine a "fit" for you.
The "Informational Interview" is usually one-half to one hour in length. Check out the "Informational Interview" handout in the Career Resource Center to learn and prepare for this experiences. "Shadow" experiences can range from one day to a few days to a week or longer depending on the individual nd the occupation being explored. The Career Network (CANE) of CSB/SJU alums is a great resource for gathering names of professionals that you could call to set up and informational interview or shadowing experience. It is helpful to also think about others you may know (family friends, relatives, professionals in your home town) that you could consider calling to set up this type of experience.
After spending time talking and observing a professional in your intended occupation, it is helpful to reflect on and evaluated what you've learned. Ask yourself these sorts of questions:
