Careers in Biology

Physician: Examines patients, orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic tests. Obtains medical histories and diagnoses illnesses.
 
Administration Budget Coordinator: Responsible for providing organizational and administrative support, maintaining databases, completing various projects, and assisting in administrative functions.
 
Professor of Anatomy: Teaches in medical school, participates in graduate education, and conducts independent research.
 
Medical Sales Representative: Deals with business-to-business sales of medical products and supplies.
 
Insurance Representative: Assists customers with applications, inquiries, and filling out insurance paperwork while using communication skills.
 
Dentist: Diagnoses, prevents, and treats teeth and gum problems. Responsible for machinery use, writing prescriptions, and conducting corrective surgery.
 
Marketing Manager: Manages sales force, sets up and motivates independent sales representatives, and develops strategic sales initiatives.
 
Research Scientist: Formulates and commercializes new products, works with research and development. Also responsible for development processes.
 
Chiropractor: Diagnoses and treats patients whose health problems are associated with the body’s muscular, nervous, and skeletal system.
 
Radiation Technologist: Prepares patients for treatment and administers prescribed doses of ionizing radiation to specific body parts.
 
Director of Human Resources: Oversees various departments that are headed by a manager. Specializes in employment, compensation, benefits, and training.
 
Environmental Planner: Creates landscapes ranging from garden plots to marsh systems. Also designs private estates and parks.
 
Pharmaceutical Sales Representative: Promotes new products, serves as a professional resource to physicians, and establishes solid business relationships.
 
Design Engineer: Responsible for design project management, designs of mechanical components, and technical and analytical activities.
 
Medical Director: Supervises staff and daily clinical operations while providing patient care.
 
Optometrist: Examines eyes to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases.
 
Wildlife Biologist: Plans and implements non-game wildlife and fisheries inventory, research, and monitoring.
 
Electronic Microscopy:  Prepares, embeds, and sections biological tissue specimens for transmission electron microscopy.
 
Graduate Placement Advisor: Assists new graduates with job placement while helping with resumes, cover letters, and interview preparation.
 
Veterinarian: Specializes in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of animal diseases and injuries.
 
Education Consultant: Prepares and presents courses, course seminars, and education sessions while assisting the principal education consultant.
 
Computer Graphics Artist: Uses computer software to generate new images, designs promotional displays, and creates logos and layout designs.
 
Physician Assistant: Provides health care services with supervision of physicians. Also responsible for diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health services.
 
Speech Pathologist: Assesses, treats, and helps prevent speech, language, cognitive, communicative, voice, swallowing, fluency, and other related disorders.
 
Adoption Counselor: Counsels people planning to adopt and provides guidance services. Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about people through records, interviews, and tests to evaluate personality characteristics.
 
Science Teacher: Plans courses, instructs students, evaluates students’ performances, instructs students, supervises student activities, and interacts with faculty, parents, and employers.
 
Cytotechnologist: Performs diagnostic testing, handles hazardous chemicals, infectious biological specimens, and sharps. Uses microscope to test and prepare tissue samples.

Occupational Therapist: Help people improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments.  They work with individuals who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally, or emotionally disabling.

Epidemiologist:  Research human diseases in order to improve human health.  Most work in research and development.  Some conduct basic research to advancer knowledge of living organisms, including viruses, bacteria, and other infectious agents.

Lawyer: Conducts criminal and civil lawsuits, draws up legal documents, advises clients as to legal rights, and practices other phases of law.

Anesthesiologist: Focus on the care of surgical patients and pain relief.  Like other physicians, they evaluate and treat patients and direct the efforts of those on their staff.  They are responsible for maintenance of the patient’s vital life functions-- heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, breathing--through continual monitoring and assessment through surgery.
