I have been using what I call a global classroom website in my Intercultural Communication 350 course since the spring of 2002.  SJU alum Kevin Clancy and I developed a cultural exchange project involving his Chinese students and my CSB/SJU students.  We wanted our intercultural classes to have contact with one another, and Kevin came up with the idea of an interactive web site.

Some of the features we use on our global classroom website include nearly weekly conversation on a question posted by Kevin and myself (each question corresponds with the readings and topics we are covering that week.), options for publicly or privately responding to individual postings, and posting photographs that illustrate one’s cultural identity (students can create extensive photo albums if they like).  Kevin’s students also create weekly message board summaries, have created photo tours of Zhanjiang Normal College and the city of Zhanjiang, are continuing to create brief lessons on specific aspects of Chinese culture, and this fall Kevin hopes to have some of his students post links to their personal web pages.  My students analyze the electronic conversation on our global classroom site for their final paper, applying the intercultural theories they have learned to the interactions they had and observed online.

While all forms of technology have their limits in terms of communication potential, I have found that my global classroom experiment has added an applied international dimension to my intercultural communication course that would be difficult to achieve otherwise.  If you are interested in seeing the website, go to http://communities.msn.com/csbsjuzhanjiang.
