2001 RecipientDr. Henry Jakubowski, Chemistry Dept. Most biochemistry textbooks present content in exactly the same order, that seems to derive from laboratory research areas that our presently dominant. This order, however, doesn’t appear to be ideal from a pedagogical point of view. For the past 13 years, I have used a very different order of presentation, so to facilitate student understanding of material presented with this unique approach, I began to write short web-based summaries of important content. On the advice of Tom Creed, I expanded this to include daily summaries posted with GIF files derived from Power Point graphics, and named the site the On-Line Study Guide (OLSG). Dissatisfied with student use of the site, I have made the OLSG interactive by adding quizzes (using WebCT), pre-class questions (using Discus), and molecular models (using Chime). Incorporation of judiciously-selected web links to other biochemistry sites has allowed the OLSG (which is presently password protected) to serve as the sole "textual" material for the course. The major difficulties with developing and using the OLSG are selecting and relearning the various software packages needed to add interactivity, and the vast time required to update the material.
