Is There Cable TV Signal Leakage in Your Room?

In the same way a plumbing system is designed to carry water throughout a building without any leaks, a cable TV system is designed to carry TV signals throughout a building without any of the TV signals leaking out of the cable.   Since many of the TV channels on the CSB/SJU cable system operate on channels that, in the outside world, are used for purposes other than TV, it is very important that the TV signals on the cable system do not leak out and interfere with these outside services.  It's just as important to maintain a leak free cable system so that signals don't enter our cable system from the outside world.  As an end user of the cable signal, you have an very important role to play in maintaining the leak free integrity of the cable system.  It is very important that you make proper and tight connections to the cable system when you hook up your TV/DVD/VCR.  To insure that you get the best possible reception without creating these leakage problems, follow these guidelines when connecting a device to the CSB/SJU cable system:

  • As always, use high quality, properly shielded, coaxial cable when connecting to the cable system.  The cable should have at least two layers of shielding to prevent the TV signals from leaking out of the cable cable system.  These cables can be purchase at any store that sells TV accessories.
  • Always make sure your connections are tight as you can make them (by hand).
  • Always use proper FM and two-way splitters when connecting multiple devises.
  • Always make sure any external whip antenna or TV rabbit ears are disconnected from the antenna connection on the back of your receiver.
  • Never use flat, twin lead antenna wire to connect your TV, VCR, or radio to the cable system.
  • Never use telephone, twisted pair, shielded twisted pair, speaker wire, or any other type of wire to connect your TV, VCR, or radio to the cable system.  Use only high quality coax cable.
  • Never wrap a wire from the cable system wall jack around the whip antenna on an FM radio or any other type of receiver.
