Meet Our Students: Wakaba Nobori

[Back]

Wakaba Nobori, a senior from Okinawa, Japan, is a senior psychology major at CSB/SJU. Wakaba is a very optimistic and happy person who always has a bright, shining smile on her face.

Wakaba expressed that she became a much happier person in her junior year, when the international students’ community grew larger and when she went to study abroad in South Africa.   She believes the increase in the number of international students has helped her feel more welcomed by the community. Wakaba thinks that American students are now more open and comfortable to ask her questions about her culture, which she truly enjoys doing.

Wakaba also said that with more students from Japan on campus, she can talk to someone from her own cultural background when she feels fragile, and this makes her feel more at home and more supported. Wakaba likes the small class sizes at CSB/SJU.  She feels she can really get to know other students, both American and international students, and to exchange ideas with them.

Wakaba said that her study abroad experience in South Africa last spring was a wonderful experience for her, an experience she might not have if she went to college in Japan. During that trip, she built close friendships with American students as she was the only Japanese student there. She said that she feels more welcome by the CSB/SJU community after her study abroad experience.

Wakaba only has one semester left before graduation. Afterward, she plans to join a volunteer program to teach Japanese in China.  Wakaba thanked CSB/SJU for providing her this wonderful opportunity.
