Johanna L. Becker, OSB
Benedictine, potter, teacher, art historian, Orientalist-- Johanna Becker combines these in the different facets of her work. For many years a teacher in the art department of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, she taught both studio classes (primarily ceramics) and art history , focusing for the past several years on the arts of Asia. As a specialist in Asian ceramics, particularly those of 17th century Japan, she has done connoisseurship for public and private museums, has published a book, Karatsu Ware (Kodansha, 1986), and written and lectured worldwide. Her art history classes benefit from the years she lived in Japan and her time spent in the majority of Asian countries as an art researcher. She holds a BFA (University of Colorado), an MFA in studio art (The Ohio State University) and a PhD in art history (The University of Michigan). Although retired, she continues to teach Asian art history classes. She is a member of the Monastery of Saint Benedict, Saint Joseph, Minnesota.
