Art

Curriculum

As an art major at CSB and SJU, you will choose a concentration in studio art or art education (or art history minor). Studio art majors acquire a thorough grounding in the skills and aesthetic judgment necessary for painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, computer art, sculpture, ceramics and digital video.

Art history minors focus on the meaning and evolution of various theories of art, as well as the role of art in contemporary and past cultures.

Art majors who plan to teach art in primary and secondary schools must complete a minor in education, in addition to fulfilling studio art and art history requirements.

Major and Minor Requirements:

Assessment

Student learning and progress is assessed by means of critiques and portfolio reviews. Each course within the department has a strong component that addresses the critique process. Students learn how to interact with one another and the instructor to determine their strengths, weaknesses and how they might achieve better results in their work. At the conclusion of each semester’s work, a final critique is held with the instructor and student to assess the student’s progress.

Portfolio reviews are made to determine the student’s readiness to enter the major and/or to assess the student’s growth within her/his course of studies.

Favorite Thing

My favorite thing about the art department is the connections I get to make with my fellow artists! I’ve met so many wonderful people and I love getting to share my work with them. – Maggie B.
