Six students with ties to the St. Cloud area are participating in the summer Undergraduate Research Program through the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University.

There were 54 students — 27 each from St. Benedict and St. John’s — and their faculty mentors are conducting undergraduate academic summer research around the globe during a 10-week period from late May to early August.

The local students conducting research include:

Michael Carr, son of Mike and Sue Carr of St. Cloud. He is an incoming junior majoring in environmental studies and political science at St. John’s.

His project is a campus sustainability study, and his adviser is Derek Larson, associate professor of environmental studies and history at St. Benedict and St. John’s;

Ryan Howe-Veenstra, son of Steve and Carol Howe-Veenstra of St. Cloud. He is an incoming senior majoring in physics and mathematics at St. John’s.

His project is phase changes of a laser beam near the focus of a deformable mirror and his adviser is Dean Langley, professor of physics at St. Benedict and St. John’s;

Kyle Jansky, son of Bruce and Carol Jansky of St. Cloud. He is an incoming junior majoring in natural science and Spanish at St. John’s.

His project is conservation biology of Andean bears in the Ecuadorean Highlands, and his adviser is Kristina Timmerman, associate professor of biology at St. Benedict and St. John’s;

Avinaj John, who lives in St. Cloud, is an incoming senior majoring in natural science at St. John’s. His project is fatty acid analysis of egg yolks, and his adviser is Jayne Byrne, associate professor of nutrition at St. Benedict and St. John’s;

Stephanie Roe, daughter of Michael and Gretchen Roe of Becker. She is an incoming junior majoring in chemistry and music at St. Benedict. Her project is synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene catalysts, and her adviser is Chris Schaller, associate professor of chemistry at St. Benedict and St. John’s;

Jonathon Walz, son of John and Sue Walz of St. Joseph. He is an incoming junior majoring in computer science and biology at St. John’s. His project is intron analysis and genetic algorithms, and his adviser is Andrew Holey, associate professor of computer science at St. Benedict and St. John’s.

Carr, Roe and John are conducting their research in Minnesota.

Howe-Veenstra and Walz are two of eight St. Benedict and St. John’s students who conducted research for six weeks with student counterparts in China, before returning to Central Minnesota for an additional six weeks of research.

Jansky is one of two St. Benedict and St. John’s students conducting his research in Ecuador.
