Maple Syrup Festival Volunteer Job Description

Jobs, Description, and Qualifications:

• Sap Collecting – moving buckets of sugar-water from the trees to the Sap tank – ability to perform manual labor
• Cooking Sap – assisting in the boiling of the sugar water - ability to perform manual labor
• Firing the cooking stove – working with wood to fire a large cooking stove – previous firing experience
• Festival Day
• Gate Personal – collects fees and membership sign-up – none
• Cooking Shack Safety Personal – reminds public  of their safety in shack – none
• Ice Cream Server – scoops ice-cream for public – none
• Info/ Membership Booth – provides information to the public on the Saint John’s Arboretum and membership – knowledge of Saint John’s Arboretum, membership, and events

Background Information:
Saint John’s Abbey has been producing maple syrup for over 60 years.  In order for the sap to flow in the trees the nights need to be below-freezing and the days need to be warm.  Saint John’s Maple Syrup Festival began the spring of 2001.   The event is filled with fun and educational tours, including the tour of the maple tree stand (called the “sugarbush”), tapping demonstrations, sap collecting, history talks, horse-drawn wagon rides, and maple syrup sundaes.
