Holding a Bonfire On-Campus

  1. All reservations for the space on Watab Island must be made through Special Events at 363-2240.  Special Events will direct you to get a burning permit from the Fire Department.
  2. As the site is reserved, Special Events will get a contact name, organization name, phone number, and account number.   If possible, also try to ascertain how may are attending.  Special Events will then contact the Arboretum or direct you to contact the Arboretum directly to request firewood.  Your request  for firewood must be received at least three days in advance.
  3. The Arboretum will deliver the firewood to Watab Island when needed and pick up any extra the next day.
  4. The Fire Department will issue the burning permit, give out the Watab Picnic Grounds Policy information, and issue 2 large trash bags (furnished by Arboretum).  The Fire Department will also advise you about how to extinguish the fire.
  5. Life Safety Staff will be notified by the Fire Department when a burning permit is issued and will monitor the site as needed.

Cost for providing a truckload of bonfire wood to Watab Island will be $25 for a half-size load (for your average bonfire) and $50 for a full-size load (for extended or night-long bonfires).  If you request an Arboretum Program at least one week in advance, the fee for the firewood will be waived.  However, you will still be responsible for reserving space on Watab Island, obtaining the burning permit, and monitoring the fire, including extinguishing it at the end.
