Committee Updates – for December 3rd, 2004

K-12 Education

·           A total of 2185 K-12 students attended classes at the arboretum this fall.

·           This winter we will be working on specific curriculum and ‘mini trunks’ for kindergarten and first grade, solidifying the 5th grade curriculum, and exploring options for 7th and 8th grade doing environmental issue investigations.

·           Both ISD 742 and other schools are already calling to book spring classes.

CSB/SJU Education

·           The new Environmental Education video is almost complete. It is being produced by a group of students in a persuasion class on campus and will be available for distribution at the end of the semester.

·           A survey prepared by students in a marketing class was distributed to 13 schools (other than ISD 742) in Stearns County to gain insight into elementary schools’ knowledge of and interest in the arboretum. Results will be available at the end of the semester.

·           During outdoor week, the Polar bear plunge had 55 participants, the bonfire and reading had 12, and the buckthorn pull had 15.

·           We will have 2 interns next semester to work on environmental education curriculum and assist with teaching.

Community Education

·         Collegeville Colors was a success with another beautiful day and over 400 participants.

·           The community buckthorn pull was combined with the outdoor week events at CSB/SJU and 15 people participated.

·           See website for listing of upcoming events.    http://www.csbsju.edu/arboretum

Public Relations and Membership Benefits

·           Newsletter is set to come out in early January .

·           Linda Mock has been preparing for Membership Recognition Evening on December 3rd.  Nearly 500 were invited and close to 150 have responded that they will attend.

Fundraising

·           Ryan Kutter prepared and submitted a $10,000 grant to the EPA on Nov. 15th.

·           Ryan is preparing a $750 grant from Captain Planet for planting prairie flowers.

·           Ryan is also reapplying for a DNR grant to help pay for more teaching trunks and transportation costs for schools.

Lands

·           Deer hunt was successful with 29 deer for 32 hunters.

·           Still working on new trail development with neighbor.  This project could use a volunteer to coordinate with ROTC and assure timely completion.

·           Logging is coming up soon and a good deal of marking needs to be done.

·           Avon Hills Initiative is getting actively involved with policy management and full meeting was scheduled for November 18th.

·           Due to uncooperative weather, we completed just one day of burning this fall. A two acre area in our prairie restoration was burned, along with seven acres on a neighbor’s property south of County Road 159.

Program Administration and Volunteer Management

·           Big News! We have been approved by the Dean’s office to begin our Fellowship Program with 2 Fellows in May of 2005.  Each will stay with us for a year.    One will be an Environmental Educator fellow and the other will be a Marketing and Communication Fellow managing our office.

·           Linda Mock did a great job on the radio talking about the Arboretum and Volunteering.
