Ski Trails at Saint John's

Parking is avaliable by the University Athletic Fields. Groomed trails are easily accessed from this location. See map below for more details.

Walkers on the ski trails…while it is wonderful that people are out exercising in the woods of Saint John’s we are having some foot traffic on the ski trail system.  Please remind people if you come across them on the ski trail that if they must walk on the groomed ski trails that they walk on the edge of the ski trail opposite the classical track.  The Prairie Wetlands, Sugar Shack (logging road), Southeastern side of the Old Entrance Road, and Chapel trails are wonderful trails for walking.  The woods and trails are plentiful for sharing.

Current Grooming Conditions

Date: March 12th, 2009

By Dave Johnson,
CSB/SJU Nordic Ski Coach

It is March 12, 2009 and the ski trails are awesome!

The Pine Knob, Hillary, and Trinity are groomed for both classical and skate.  They should stay that way through the weekend.  The warm weather (above 32F) Saturday and Sunday will not cause much change to the trails until late Sunday afternoon.  After that I expect that the mornings will be “icy” and the afternoon will be “soft”.  We will need 3-4 nights of above the 32F before they become un-skiable.  Enjoy!

Skiing at Saint John’s: The ski trails are part of the Saint John’s Arboretum.  The land is owned by the monks of the monastery and is not intended to be “public land.” The ski trails are groomed for the benefit of the ski team, faculty, staff, students, members of the CSB and SJU communities, and the Arboretum.  All of the grooming is performed by volunteer efforts of a few individuals plus the help of a student employee.  We collect no trail fees, yet if you are not part of the above mentioned I ask that you join the Saint John’s Arboretum at the $40 Supporting yearly membership level.  On the application please indicate that you are a skier. By joining the Arboretum you will receive all the information and benefits of every member and can freely use the trails.  You will also be supporting the ski trails and the grooming we do.
