A lecture with discussion to follow with Randall Arendt, | |

Our cities and rural areas are becoming more populated, with evidence of residential and commercial development growing across the landscape. How do we balance the demand for development with the preservation of natural assets and the rural character? How do we plan to ensure sufficient greenspaces and recreational opportunities for residents? In short, how do we ensure development means improvement of the durability and quality of our communities, and not undifferentiated "growth"? This workshop, presented by internationally known author and conservation planner Randall Arendt, will focus on the process and techniques that enable developers and local officials to work together to accomplish residential development while maintaining the natural elements of contiguous parcels. It also will describe how this design process can fit into the local regulatory framework through specific provisions in comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, and subdivision regulations. Randall Arendt, FRTPI, ASLA (Hon) is an internationally recognized land use planner, site designer, author and advocate of low-impact conservation subdivisions for a wide variety of clients including local governments, landowners and private developers. He has lectured extensively in the United States and internationally and is the author of more than twenty publications on the topic of conservation planning and development.
