Earth Week 2008

Tuesday, April 15th:

Saint Ben’s Woods Plant Identification Walk (4pm)
Meet by the BAC
Come explore the St. Ben’s woods with the Plant Science Alliance!  Professor Steve Saupe from the biology department will lead us through the trails, introducing us to plants we meet along the way.  Dr. Saupe will offer helpful tips for basic plant identification and share fascinating facts about the plants we encounter.  Meet by the main entrance of the BAC (near parking lot 4) and we’ll walk out to the woods together.  Please come dressed for the occasion—this will help to make your experience the best that it can be.  Hope to see you there!  In case of stormy weather, we will tour the Saint John’s Greenhouse (located in the Peter Engel Science Center). 

Wednesday, April 16th:

Beaver Tales (5:30pm)
Meet by the pendulum in the New Science Center (SJU)
Did you know that there is a Beaver Lodge in the Arboretum!? Come join the Saint John's Arboretum and other Beaver enthusiasts as we take a short hike to the lodge, share some stories, and celebrate nature. *Live Beavers not guaranteed.   

Thursday, April 17th:

Biology in a Bottle (5:30-6:30pm)
New Science Center room 150 (Natural History Museum)
Come to this event and create a mini ecosystem to take home with you using recyclable bottles. This project emphasizes an interesting way to use recyclable bottles to learn about biology on a smaller scale. The materials for this event will be provided for you and the event is FREE!

Planetarium Show (7:00-8:00pm)
St. Cloud State University
Learn about astronomy in SCSU’s newly renovated planetarium.  The planetarium’s projector is a state-of-the-art and has the capability of projecting 8,500 stars and can illustrate 24 constellations.  Seating is limited to 60 people and registration will be given on a first come first serve basis.  To register please send an e-mail to arboretum@csbsju.edu or call (320) 363-3163.  The event is free and we will be meeting in front of the New Science Center (SJU) to car pool.

Friday, April 18th:

Walk/Run/Roll to Class (All Day)
Instead of driving or taking the bus today try walking, running, biking, rollerblading, etc on the Wobegon Trail to get to class between the CSB and SJU campuses.

Sat, April 19th:

Bongo for the Congo Drum Jam (7 - 11pm)
Groove out to a drum circle for peace on our planet.  Bring your Flutes, didgeridoos, inspirational spoken words, drums, and dancing feet. 
There will be lots of extra drums provided by the St. Cloud Boys and Girls Club and as always when we are drumming outside- FIRE.  We practice all forms of rhythms  and beginner drummers are always welcome.

Sunday, April 20th:

Hog Roast (3:00pm)
Watab Island (SJU)
Come enjoy some food and outdoor games including croquet, bocce ball, frisbee golf, frisbee, and guided nature hikes. Vegetarian options will be provided. There will be a bonfire following the roast.

Monday, April 21st:

Compostable Cook Out (4:45-7:15pm)
Refectory (SJU)
The refectory and Campus Greens will be serving dinner this evening on compostable cookware.  The dinner will be served outdoors (weather permitting).  Cost is the same as an ordinary meal at the Refectory (meal plans can be used).

Planet Earth Showing (7:15pm-9:15 pm)
Pellegrene Auditorium (Peter Engel Science Center)
See the spectacular BBC special on the big screen!  The Arboretum will present an episode or two of the critically acclaimed documentary in Pellegrene Auditorium followed by a professor-led discussion. The footage in these documentaries offer phenomenal film work and allow a window into the often unseen world of plants and animals from around the world.

Tuesday, April 22nd (Earth Day):

Litter/Trash Clean Up (4-5pm)
New Science Center Room 150 (Natural History Museum)  

Do your part this Earth Day by picking up litter! Meet in the Natural History Museum to get assigned areas for clean up, gloves and trash bags.  First 20 people to volunteer will receive a prize!
