Learning How to Learn
"In college, I discovered that I learn best through a process of active input followed by quiet reflection. I remember engaging in many invigorating classroom debates and discussions whose full impact wasn't appreciated unless followed by hike around Lake Sag, or to the chapel or arboretum."
Learning in the Wilderness
"Today I operate an adventure travel company and facilitate logistics for arctic expeditions—which involve bouts of very frenetic activity that are balanced by a home and family life deep in a wilderness setting. I've led five dogsled expeditions to the North Pole and have authored two books about my expeditions. My wife and I also own an outdoor apparel business."
Learning around the World and at Home
"What struck me most during my college years was the contrast between the quiet thoughtfulness of its tranquil woodland setting and the global reach and mission of its Benedictine community. Now I find that contrast neatly mirrored in myself, with a home and business in the Northwoods and a quest to explore the earth's most remote corners—including the North Pole."
