Learning in Groups

“I learned the most from group projects assigned as part of social work classes. The dynamics of a group is fascinating with how work gets accomplished. These lessons in team roles and work ethics, and the final result have carried through today in that a group success can mean a great deal when it comes from great effort.”

Learning in Sports

“While in college I was a member of a basketball team that went to the Division III Final Four. I was a two-time captain of the team and was also the first woman president of the crew club. I’ve always learned a lot through my involvement in teams.

“After graduating from CSB, I completed an internship with the Red Cross, worked as a social worker and coached basketball. Knowing that I wanted to work in sports, I eventually enrolled in graduate school at Northern Illinois University, and received a master’s degree in sports management in 1998.

“As I neared completion of that program, I found out about an internship with the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The director didn’t hire me for the internship, but actually offered me a full-time job. I started out as a dorm mom, and have moved up the ladder. In my current position, I coordinate all logistics from transportation, to meals, to beds for the residents and campers who are there everyday.

“I got to this point as management staff with the United States Olympic Training Center through continued learning and focus on a mission: to assist America's Olympic Hopefuls perform on the world's stage and strive to stand on the podium at an Olympic Games. I like the variety each day brings and that basic customer service can apply in almost any business: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Learning at The Games

“Spending 57 days in Athens with colleagues was the biggest challenge and best reward of my career so far. The group dynamic lessons learned in college were helpful in dealing with a multinational, bilingual, multi-generational team. We accomplished our goal of transforming a college campus into a functional Olympic Training Center in 14 days. Our team executed training prior to and during the Games and left only a positive footprint once we departed. It provided me great satisfaction to plan and execute the way our team did.”
