More about Melissa’s college experience: In college I was a member of the Chamber Choir, performed in several Music Department Operas, worked for Campus Groove Recordings — a promotional on-campus recording group, had an internship with the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra, worked for the Music Department for four years and performed a vocal recital my Junior and Senior year. I was busy and loved every minute of it! My favorite memory was Christmas at St. Johns every year when we sang two concerts in the Great Hall and one concert at the Basilica in Minneapolis with the Chamber Choir.
Studying abroad: I had the unique opportunity of participating in two semester-long study abroad programs — Cork, Ireland and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. I had the privilege of volunteering for a government-run children’s home in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala where I took care of a group of 16 mentally and physically challenged orphans. Each day that I worked with them I was truly inspired by their strength and courage.
What impresses Melissa about CSB/SJU: The sense of community at Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s makes you feel like you are home from the second you step on campus!
Fun facts: I was born in Denver, Colorado but grew up in Minnesota and have two younger sisters. I have a ten-gallon fish tank with four goldfish that I have had since my first month of college at Saint Ben’s. I have been to 15 different countries. I love wakeboarding and snowboarding, and was a synchronized swimmer for two years. I performed in my first operetta in third grade and my favorite roles since have been Laurie in Oklahoma and Bloody Mary in South Pacific. I can speak Spanish and select phrases in Norwegian and Kiche (Mayan). My favorite pastimes are traveling, spending time outside, and reading historical fiction.
