ELS Language Centers

International students needing intensive English instruction prior to enrollment are referred to one of the 45 ELS Language Centers in the United States. Completion of level 112 is accepted as proof of English proficiency. The nearest ELS language center to CSB/SJU is located in St. Paul, Minnesota (a 1.5 hour drive from CSB/SJU) but students may attend any of the centers across the country. For more information contact Elaine Matyi at the ELS program at: ematyi@st.thomas.edu or at 651-962-5990 (phone) or 651-962-5991 (fax).

English Language Proficiency (TOEFL)

  1. Students who have a TOEFL score of 550 or 213 (computer-based) or higher when applying for admission will be interviewed by an English as Second Language (ESL) instructor before classes begin to determine if they have a speaking proficiency in English of "advanced plus" according to guidelines by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Those who demonstrate this level of proficiency will have satisfied the foreign language proficiency requirement. (Students submitting test results other than the TOEFL, such as those who have taken English Language Services courses through level 109, will be evaluated individually by the ESL instructor.)
  2. Students with a TOEFL score of 550 or 213 (computer-based) or higher who have not achieved a speaking proficiency level of "advanced plus" will complete (with a grade of C or better) four mods of ESL, listening comprehension and speaking (ESL 101, 102, 105, and 106).
  3. Students who submit a TOEFL score result lower than 550 or 213 (computer-based) when applying for admission will complete (with a grade of C or better) two semesters of ESL (ESL 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108).
