Welcome to the Accounting and Finance Department
The Accounting and Finance Department's mission is to educate accountants and finance professionals who are prepared for a dynamic and changing world.
Three paths to success are available through our curriculum.
The first path is the CPA preparation track. Due to changes in the requirements to sit for the Certified Public Accounting test, students are required to take a heavy class load. We've designed a path that will provide you with the credits and exposure to various disciplines you need; and we can help you achieve the required 150 credit hours in four years, with a few summer or advanced placement credits in the mix.
The second path is our accounting track, and that will give you a broader, more general view of accounting. This path is ideal for students looking forward to a career working in corporate accounting departments or students planning on exploring entrepreneurial opportunities.
Finance is our newest path, and it will prepare you for careers focusing on financial analysis in a variety of industries. If you are interested in the stock market, the impact of interest rate changes, and economic indicators, this might be the path for you.
Department Highlights
- CSB/SJU graduates score particularly well on the CPA examination because of the strength of the accounting program and our liberal arts focus within the program.
- The Accounting and Finance Club sponsors visits to accounting firms, guest speakers, mock interviews and fun activities.
- The Accounting and Finance department has a 32-computer mobile laptop lab for use in class settings, giving students hands-on opportunities to enhance computer skills, learn new technlogy skills and utilize technology as a learning tool.
- We have developed a business simulation course for accounting, economics and management students to work together in teams and see the immediate impact of their business decisions. Guest speakers from a variety of functions within businesses provide additional input to the class.
- Exceptional opportunties exist to interview on-campus for internships, summer experience programs and full-time employment.
Overview of Program
- Through a series of two and four credit classes and internships, we can prepare you to take the CPA exam in four years.
- We have added more business-related courses and a business writing/communication course to the traditional accounting track.
- The major includes a finance track that focuses on economics, international finance and corporate financial analysis.
