May 8 CSB commencement features poet Elizabeth Alexander as speaker

Elizabeth Alexander, poet, essayist, playwright and Yale professor, will deliver the commencement address during the 95th annual commencement ceremony at the College of Saint Benedict at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8 in the Clemens Field House/Haehn Campus Center on the CSB campus, St. Joseph. During the commencement ceremony, CSB will present its President's Medal to Telzena Coakley, a retired educator from the Bahamas, and Kathy Cooney, executive vice president, chief administrative office and chief financial officer for HealthPartners and current chairperson of the CSB Board of Trustees. The 2010 CSB graduation class includes 494 women, which is the second largest class in school history. When combined with Saint John's University's 444 undergraduate men, this year's undergraduate graduating class of 938 is the second-largest class. More info.

Edwin Leahy delivers commencement address May 9 at SJU

The Rev. Edwin D. Leahy, OSB, headmaster of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., will deliver the Saint John's University commencement address at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 9, in the Saint John's Abbey Church. Also during the commencement ceremony, Saint John's Abbey and University will present its Pax Christi Award to John Paul Lederach, professor of international peace-building at the University of Notre Dame. The 2010 Saint John's graduating class includes 444 undergraduate men, which is the third-largest class, and 29 School of Theology•Seminary graduates. When combined with the College of Saint Benedict's 494 graduates, this year's undergraduate graduating class of 938 is the second-largest class. More information.

CSB and SJU approve new Asian Studies major

A new Asian Studies major at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University will help graduates pursue careers in Asia and make them more competitive in a job market which increasingly demands the ability to develop strong working relationships with Asian colleagues. The Asian Studies major, approved by the CSB Board of Trustees and SJU Board of Regents, is shaped by an 80-year legacy of Benedictine involvement in education, community-building and East-West dialogue in Asia. CSB and SJU honor Student Employees/Team of the Year

Kasey Heichel, Austin Reischl and the College of Saint Benedict Events and Conferences student team have been named Student Employees/Team of the Year at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. The awards were held in conjunction with National Student Employee Appreciation Week April 12-16. More information

Student Accounts Offices announce online billing

The Student Accounts Offices at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University will implement a new billing process beginning with the July 2010 billing statement. This change is taking place for several reasons.

1. Instant access. Students and authorized users will receive e-mail notification as soon as a new online billing statement is available.
2. 24-hour convenience. Students and authorized users may view information relating to billing accounts, statements, and account activity at their convenience. This new process works hand in hand with the online payment option.
3. Environmentally friendly. The 2010-2011 academic year has been designated as Sustainability Year by the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. E-billing correlates directly with the leadership role the schools have taken in sustainability for higher education.
4. Increased security. Reduce the risk of identity theft associated with sending sensitive financial information through the mail.

Please watch for additional information regarding this important change. This information will provide instruction on how to view the student's online statements and set up authorized users. Authorized users may view online billing information and make online payments.

CSB/SJU Bookstores schedule Book Buy Back

Book Buy Back is 8:30-4:30 May 4-7 at the CSB/SJU Bookstores. Students will receive half of the purchase price of a textbook if the professor has ordered the text for the next semester and if the bookstore does not already have a sufficient number of books. The bookstores are sponsoring a promotion at each location in which students can win over 100 prizes, including gift cards, beverages and candy. More information: Book Buy Back

A message to parents of seniors, from the editors of The Record

The editors of the CSB/SJU student newspaper, The Record, are planning a "senior page" in the last issue of the year to celebrate the graduating seniors.

Annual Giving helps offset expected shortfall

Because of the anticipated Minnesota State Grant Program shortfall, 595 Bennies could lose grant aid on which they depend next fall - totaling over a half million dollars. Saint Ben's alumnae, parents and friends have stepped up to the challenge and are supporting student scholarships with gifts to the CSB Annual Giving Program.
