Career Services helps students explore global opportunities
We hear often that today's students must be prepared to function in a global economy. CSB/SJU is aware of this and has taken steps to help students prepare for this challenge. The extensive study abroad programs at CSB/SJU, 17 programs in 14 countries, offer students the opportunity to explore new and divergent cultures. Several of these programs offer students the opportunity to engage in an internship or volunteer program while abroad. The London, South Africa, China and Guatemala programs are examples of those offering experiential learning opportunities. Students participating in any program can explore internship options through the Office of Education Abroad and the Office of Experiential Learning and Community Engagement.
Career Services has teamed up with the Office of Education Abroad to help students with the application process, including their resume and interviewing preparation. After students return from their study abroad program, Career Services assists them with articulating their experience. Many employers view participation in a study abroad program as an asset, but students have to be able to translate their experience to employers. Students need to effectively talk about their cultural awareness, intercultural communication skills and ability to adapt.
Career Services offers resources to assist students in learning about global opportunities as they prepare to study abroad, seek international internships and jobs and explore options to volunteer abroad. A key resource Career Services has made available to students to gain information on overseas experiences is the website "Going Global," featuring information on more than 30 countries and resources to utilize to find jobs, internships or volunteer experiences. Along with "Going Global," Career Services sponsors programming throughout the year, exposing students to global experiences. The annual Full-Time Volunteer Fair, the partnership with Asian Studies on "Teaching in Asia," and the Career Expo panel on "Global Opportunities" have all been events well attended by students. The annual Private College Job and Internship Fair, held in February, also offers students the opportunity to meet with representatives of organizations, some with international exposure.
If your daughter or son has an interest in exploring global opportunities, encourage them to stop in and discuss their goals with us.
