Stoked Exhibition

Stoked: Five Artists of Fire and Clay is a nationally touring exhibition and visual catalogue organized and presented by Saint John's University. Stoked reviews recent work by Richard Bresnahan, Artist in Residence at Saint John's University, and four former apprentices who have worked with Richard and the Saint John's Pottery since it was established thirty years ago. Each of the artists has been influenced by the artistic style established by Richard, as well as his focus on local, sustainable materials and community engagement. With that continuity in mind, this 30th-anniversary project highlights the development of creative identity within and outside the bounds of apprenticeship. The selected works are presented as a conversation between five creative forces rather than a rigid or linear development.

The exhibition catalogue is a 9.25 x 11" soft cover edition, 112 pages, with explanatory text and full-color images of the approximately 80 works in the exhibition, as well as a brief biographical and artistic review of each of the five artists. Lavishly illustrated with nearly 90 color photographs, the Stoked catalogue explores a range of contemporary American ceramics: from the robust stonewares of Bresnahan, Flicker, and Johnson to the whimsical redwares of Earp and the elegant sculptures of Meyer. The essays reveal each individual's search for identity and the cross-fertilization the inevitably occurs when creative people form diverse backgrounds are mindful not only of the past but of generations to come.

Catalogues can be ordered, for $29.95 each, by contacting Ryan Kutter at the Saint John's Pottery Studio.
