Non-Degree Graduate Study
A full degree does not serve the needs of every person interested in graduate theological study. Some, seeking personal or professional enrichment, choose to enter as non-degree students. Even some students studying full-time, if they are on sabbatical or in a graduate certificate program, have non-degree status. They establish a course of study for themselves, in consultation with a faculty adviser and the Dean or Associate Dean.
Students who begin their studies with non-degree status may later apply for a degree program. Credits earned at Saint John's may be applied to their degree according to that degree's requirements.
The graduate certificate program often suits those seeking a year of renewal or sabbatical or who are transitioning from one form of ministry to another.
Sabbaticals at Saint John's allow students to choose from a wide variety of graduate and undergraduate courses and take advantage of the many opportunities for enrichment and reflection available both at Saint John's and the College of Saint Benedict.
Web-based courses are designed for non-traditional graduate students and usually include both non-degree and degree-seeking students. A limited number of credits from online courses may be applied to a degree program.
Study abroad opportunities, offered to both non-degree and degree-seeking students, enrich a student's program of study. We currently offer an integrated program in the Holy Land in which participants journey through the land of the Bible while studying the sacred texts. Anyone is welcome to apply for the Holy Land Study Tour. The course taken as part of the Holy Land Study Tour, Biblical and Archaeological Sites, may be done for credit or audit.
