Beyond the Classroom
The CSB/SJU Psychology Department offers a variety of opportunities for psychology majors beyond the classroom. From Teaching Practicums to research opportunities to internships, students have the chance to apply their knowledge and gain experience for careers in psychology.
- Teaching Practicum (PSYC 399)
The practicum offers senior psychology majors teaching experience by assisting with introductory psychology labs.
- Honors Thesis (PSYC 398)
Students closely work with a faculty research supervisor from the psychology department in writing a thesis, conducting research, or executing a creative project. Students who show excellence in their honors thesis may graduate with "Distinction in Psychology."
- Senior Project (PSYC 396)
Students examine their own researchable hypothesis in consultation with one or more department members. A four credit project can fulfill the senior psychology capstone requirement.
- Internship (PSYC 397)
Opportunities range widely; students have worked in a variety of business organization, abuse treatment centers, court system settings and mental health agencies. Professors in the department, as well as the CSB/SJU internship program director, are available to assist students in arranging a semester or summer experience.
- Empirical Research Project (PSYC 300)
An empirical research project (ERP) is a supervised study including an empirical data-based research project. Students enrolled in an ERP typically assist a faculty member with their research projects.
- Independent Learning Project (PSYC 371)
An Independent Learning Project (ILP) is supervised reading or research at the upper-division level. Students completing and Independent Learning Project are able to cover content that may otherwise not be offered in the curriculum.
- Summer Research Fellowship
Summer Research Fellowships are employment opportunities that support students engaged in research for 10 weeks during the summer. Research fellows work alongside a faculty member on various psychological research projects.
