Francis Olsem

Name: Francis Olsem

Class: Mammalia... and senior

Major: Math

I became an OL because... this place is something special. We're all given a chance to start fresh when we come to college. We are given the chance to be who we want to be without parents and teachers trying to force us in one direction or another. For the first time, we're taking the reins solo. Orientation helps us hit the ground running, and I was lucky enough to have a couple spectacular OLs to get me comfortable and confident in the craziness that is the beginning of the first year of college. I want to return that favor!

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: Hands down, if I could be any food I would be the chocolate in an impressive fond du fountain. Real smooth, gets to meet all the cute strawberries and pineapples. Not to mention I'd get invited to all the classy parties.

Memorable College Experience: College is all about the memories, and for me it's Johnnie football, camping in the arboretum, snow days, men's retreats, chapel walks, sand volleyball, Thanksgiving dinners, 4am talks, and so much more with the people I've come to love. But one of my favorites is when the power at St. John's went out on a beautiful spring day freshman year. Classes were cancelled and the dorms emptied out as the lawns and beaches filled up with picnics, catch, frisbee, guitars, and tanners. That was the point where it hit me that "man, THIS is college!" There should be a power outage every year.

I became an OL because I am proud to be a Johnnie and I have cherished my time here at CSB/SJU.  I want to show the incoming CSB/SJU students all the amazing opportunities that are available to them, as well get the freshman STOKED for their freshman year here at CSB/SJU...because I guarantee, it's going to be AWESOME!

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: If I could be any food, I would either be a Cliff Bar, a Never-Ending Gobstopper, or one of those "random" chocolates that you get in your Box of Chocolates. The reason I would consider being a chocolate is because it takes a spontaneous person to eat that awkward, random chocolate that is unique to the rest of the chocolates.  I would consider being a Never-Ending Gobstopper because I like being a kid and never growing up, and I feel like the Never-Ending Gobstopper encompasses that.  However, in the end, I would be the Cliff Bar.  The Cliff Bar lives an interesting life.  First, it is a healthier version of other granola bars, and it was developed as a meal supplement for people adventuring.  The Cliff Bar is also a part of the company 1% For The Planet, where 1% of all Cliff Bar sales goes directly to preserving our world's environment.   The Cliff Bar leads an interesting life.  It could be eaten when climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, rock climbing in Arizona, traveling through Antarctica, or when camping and exploring through Patagonia.  In the end, the Cliff Bar is the coolest food.  It's healthy, it's saving the planet, and it's getting to see most awesomest (yup, I just made that word up) places in the world. Rock on Cliff Bar.

Memorable College Experience:  It is impossible for me to pick my most memorable college experience, because I've had too many "most memorable moments;" they range from the freshman dance, storming the field after a game winning 49 yard field goal, studying abroad and backpacking through Australia / New Zealand, where I went scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef, Bungee jumped four times, went skydiving, canyoning, white water rafting, and climbed a mountain. Attending the Zumba marathon, hanging out at Lake Sag, Chapel walks, singing songs on the Link, living on Tommie 4, Halloween, Hot Johnnie Bread, Popcorn Chicken days at the Reef, and Snow days.

Memorable College Experience:  Well, it's hard to pick just one because there have been so many, but it's a toss-up between the freshman orientation dance at Brother Willie's Pub and a slip and slide down the hall of Metten 64.

Tim Solfest

Name: Tim Solfest

Class: 2014

Major: Mathematics, Elementary Education

Involvement: Crew, MSG, praise in the pub, FYRE, MOCK TRIAL, ABE, orchestra, intermural soccer, Booyah, Redgage, student ambassador, OLTA, BSM retreat volunteer, living the Johnnie life!!

I became an OL because...I want to make connections with incoming freshmen and help them to acclimate to college life.  Also, because orientation leaders have a ton of fun.

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: I would be a gummy bear because they are colorful and fun and everybody loves them.  Also, gummy bears are squishy and able to bend like crazy.  If I had to choose I think I would be red, or tie die.

Memorable College Experience:  Hanging out in Mary chapel until ungodly hours the day before big papers and homework is due but making it all worth it!!

Andy Spear

Name: Andy Spear

Class: 2014

Major: Management

Involvement: Intramural Volleyball and Soccer, Student Ambassador, Praise in the Pub

I became an OL because... I really like talking, a lot. But also because I want to show off SJU/CSB and all the great aspects of it, to the new first years. Plus I had a great experience with my OL, and I want to give a fun experience to a group of new first years as well.

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: If I could be any food, I would probably have to be.. cake. Vanilla cake, with chocolate frosting. Dessert is the best part of the meal.

Memorable College Experience: I would have to say the two snow-days we had this past school year were really awesome. I had left school to visit a friend in Winona for the weekend, and I had to drive 9 hours in one of the biggest blizzards of the winter, just so I could get back to St. Johns in time for class on Monday. Turns out we had a snow day on that Monday... Thankfully so, because I had not done any homework that was due, and let's just say my final grade would not have been as high, had I not gotten that snow day!

Chris Traynor

Name: Chris Traynor

Class: Senior

Major:  Biology/ Pre-Medicine

Involvement:  Biology Club, Pre-Med Club, Intramurals

I became an OL because... I had a good experience during my orientation and I like the idea of carrying on that tradition.

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: Steak...It's my favorite food and let's be honest who doesn't like a steak (Bridget doesn't count for that stat;))

Memorable College Experience: Study abroad in South Africa

Adam Tucker

Name: Adam Tucker

Class: Sophomore

Major: English

Involvement: Editor of The Record newspaper at CSB/SJU, and member of BAM ultimate frisbee team.

I became an OL because... my orientation leaders were so good, I wanted to pass on their influence to others!

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: I would be anything gluten-free and delicious, because that combination is pretty hard to come by.

Memorable College Experience: I really enjoy spending time with my CSB/SJU friends and partying at Johnnie sporting events!

Jacob Wolf

Name: Jacob Gerard Wolf

Class: 2014

Major: Biology (Pre-Vet)

Involvement: Played Varsity Soccer last year, Biology Club, Eucharistic Minister, Special Olympics Basketball Coach, took a Biology Class through SJU to Ecuador/Galapagos Islands for a month this summer.

I became an OL because... St. John's is one of the best decisions I have ever made.  It is challenging yet fun, and I love the atmosphere and everything it has to offer.  I want to be able to tell everyone all there is to know about SJU so they can learn to love it as much as I do.  People may call me many things throughout my life, but I truly hope people will forever call me a Johnnie.

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: a subway sandwich because I come ready to order and am always fresh.  I have many different toppings (many of which are tasty and promote a healthy diet) and sides that come along with me.

Memorable College Experience: when my friend and I took a 3 hour walk through the arboretum/Watab Island and were attacked by a mother and baby raccoon that had fallen out of a tree.  We saw a lot of neat nature that afternoon and that raccoon gave us a real scare.

Evans Yamoah

 Name: Evans Yamoah

Class: Rising Senior

Major: French /Pre Med

Involvement: Student manager of Student Activities & Leadership Development, Pre Med Club, French Club, Community Conduct & Standards Board, tennis, intramurals, fun & awesomeness, avid watcher of How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM)

I became an OL because...in my opinion, orientation is one of the most important factors in one's career as a first year. I see it as a key way to help first years properly transition into their college lives and for this reason, I believe the least I can do is to help make this process successful. Orientation was an amazing experience for me and it is my hope that I can re-create the experience that I had, and be able to  share it with my fellow incoming johnnies.

If you could be any food, what would it be? Why?: I would be coq au vin because it is delectable and heavenly...and its French, 'nuff said

Memorable College Experience: I would have to say all of it...there hasn't been an experience that I regret having so far. Be it getting to know everyone on my floor and building through community building exercise, studying abroad in France, going to football games or cooking meals with my roommates in our apartment.
