If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Buckled in for the Ride. I would say this because my life has taken me to places and I have done things that I would have never imagined possible. Life is a ride and instead of settling for comfort and normality I have gone out of my comfort zone and experienced once in a life time opportunities. Life is short and instead of getting out of the car early, I choose to buckle in and experience whatever life has in store for me in the future. Memorable college experience: Thus far, I would say going to Ecuador for a summer term abroad through St. John's. I met amazing friends and experienced incredible adventures. Memorable College Experience: My most memorable memory was while I was abroad in Austria. A group of us decided to hike up one of the local mountains but a few of us including myself got a little tired so we decided to hitchhike to the top (normally not recommended). The man who picked us up went about 80 kph up a single lane road all the while passing bikers with oncoming traffic in the other lane. It turned out our new friend was about to go hang-gliding and had just finished a bike ride up and down the same mountain we were too lazy to hike! |

Name: Derek Rausch Class: 2013 Major: Theology Involvement: Saint John's Senate, RedGage, SJU Track and Field, Prison Ministry, Men's Spirituality, FYRE retreat 2010, Study Abroad Roman-Greco 2011 I became an orientation leader because... I have been blessed with so many opportunities and relationships during my years at CSB-SJU. If I can help others to find an experience as thrilling to them as mine has been for me, I will have given back to the community that has done so much for me. I know the significance of starting a new part of life and want to help make the transition come comfortably for the freshmen class. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? THERE GOES RED FLOW. The verses of the rhyme would describe a character with distinct long red hair who seems to be up to something silly again. Red Flow would welcome the laughs that may come at his witty expense because he has fun exploring everyday. Memorable College Experience: Doing a victory lap with the 2011 SJU Track team after winning a very rainy MIAC Outdoor Championship was something I will never forget. |

CSB/SJU has such a rich heritage, culture and tradition I wanted to share it with the incoming first years. Also to see the other side of where I was 3 years ago and bringing the Benedictine spirit to everyone coming in and share what I have to offer in whatever might help these incoming first years to succeed as they go through their time here, especially their first year. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? All around the Sycamore tree: I have lived in the Midwest my whole life and a sycamore tree is native to the Midwest and life is never the same, and yet is always moving, hence when going around a tree one is still moving but never runs around at the same place in the same pattern. It is always a surprise of what will pop up around on the other side of the tree! Memorable College Experience: My most memorable college experience would have to be the College Bound canoe trip to the boundary waters. It was wet 75% of the time while up there, we slept in a bus the last night and each guy in my group besides one I have seen or hung out with nearly every day for the past two years. It has put me a head of the game from coming to college and brought be great and everlasting friendships. |

I had a great Orientation Leader and a great experience during orientation, and I really want to return the favor. I feel at home at CSBSJU, and I want to help others feel the same way. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Bill's Big Adventure, for two reasons. First, because life is a big adventure, and second because adventures are fun and I try to have as much fun as possible. Memorable College Experience: My most memorable college experience has been studying abroad in Athens and Rome. It was an eye-opening trip where I experienced two different cultures with a great group of friends while learning a lot. |
![]() |
Name: Michael Hainlin Class: 2013 Major: Social Science and Secondary Education Involvement: Intramural Sports, Study Buddy Volunteering (St. Joe Lab School) I became an orientation leader because... I became an OL because I enjoyed so much about my own Orientation experience. I recognized how much Orientation played a role in creating the community bonds, standards and traditions that Bennies and Johnnies pride themselves in, and wanted to be a part of that process. OLs get the awesome opportunity to show their school pride by inspiring the next year to share that same pride in our incredible, unique schools! If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? The Little Old Man That Fell Up The Mountain-because it would teach children that if they learn to laugh at themselves and go with the flow, that everything would work itself out in the end. Memorable College Experience: One of my most memorable college experiences has been Studying Abroad. This seems a little obvious, but in all honesty nothing could compare and the only reason I was able to have this amazing experience in Rome and Athens is because CSB|SJU has such an extensive and incredible study abroad program. Otherwise, pancakes with Fr. Bill, football games and rushing the field, friends, work-study jobs, and discreetly passing out during the epidural portion of "The Miracle of Birth" during one of my education classes. |
![]() |
Name: Dan Pesek Class: 2013 Major: Accounting Involvement: I am currently abroad so I am not involved on-campus. When I get back I would like to participate in SIFE and be a study abroad ambassador. I became an OL because... I became an OL because I love my school and I want to share this passion with the new students. I want to help them find their way in this new place so they can have as enjoyable of an experience at school as I have. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? "Little Danny Boy Finds Joy"-This would be the tittle because I strive to find enjoyment in everything I do. Just like my life, it would be the story of me exploring new things that could potentially bring excitement to my life. Memorable College Experience: One of my most memorable college experiences was the first year orientation dance at Brother Willies Pub. It was so much fun to dance and laugh with so many new people. Everyone was so excited to be entering college and a new stage of their lives that they were happy and willing to meet new people. It was a great, positive bonding experience with my new classmates that I will never forget. |

Name: Dustin Schlangen Class: 2013 Major: Individualized - Health Science Involvement: Allied Health Club, PTAT Club, Intramurals year-round I became an OL because... I became an OL because I wanted to ensure that the incoming students had the great experience that I did when I first came to St. John's/St. Ben's. They say that the first impression is everything, and with that being said I wanted to try and give the incoming students the best impression of St. John's/St. Ben's as possible. Along with that, I wanted to do my part as a Johnnie and pass the tradition of St. John's down to the incoming students. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? "Sun and Fun" I would call my life nursery rhyme "Sun and Fun" because I believe that everything is more fun and enjoyable when outside and in the sun. I'm a big outdoorsman and love the feeling of having lots of space and fresh air. Along with that, I think that everything is more fun outside as you are allowed to get dirty and cut loose. Memorable College Experience: My most memorable college experience was my first year when the Johnnies played St. Thomas in Clemens Stadium. There were thousands of students and fans at the game with high energy as St. Thomas is one of our biggest rivals. It came down to the last second of a nail biter game when our kicker hit a long field goal to give us a lead. The student section stormed the field and flooded the players with chants and congratulatory celebrations. Students, family, friends, and alumni managed to stay on the field long after the game was over and turned it into my most memorable college experience. |

Class: 2013 Major: Sociology Involvement: In my time at CSBSJU, I have been a member of the Saint John's Golf Team, Men's Chorus, All-College Choir, Optimists Club, and Marketing Club. I also enjoy attending on-campus speakers, concerts, and other events. I became an OL because... I want to expose incoming first-years to the communal environment to which they will belong for their years at CSBSJU. By helping them become comfortable in their new home, I hope they will be able to make the most of their college experience. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Instead of "All Around the Mulberry Bush", my nursery rhyme would be titled "All Around the Campuses". Throughout each day, I am visiting friends, attending class, eating meals, viewing shows, utilizing the athletic facilities, and staying busy with other options on both the SJU and CSB campuses. Memorable College Experience: One of my favorite days here at college began with a Saturday afternoon football game. Because of the heat, at halftime, my buddies and I ran down to the lake, jumped in and swam to the raft. After watching the dance team at halftime and the end of the game, we went back to Lake Sag and rented a canoe and enjoyed a relaxing trip on the water. |

If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? One Feet, Two Feet, Busted and Bruised Feet. As a sprinter at St. John's I've faced injuries, but I'm sticking with it, and still running until my feet fall off. Memorable College Experience: Every Johnnie football game is memorable, but storming the field with the Rat Pak and the rest of the student section after beating ranked St. Olaf is something I will not soon forget. |

It would be called this because, most of my life I never felt like I really fit in well with the people I was friends with or my school, but since coming to SJU I have found right where I belong.. Memorable College Experience: On the first snow of the year my first year at SJU me and my friends went out to have snowball fight in front of Mary Hall and it grew to over 20 people and it was just a bunch of people playing in the snow like we used to do when we were 8 years old again. After the fight we all went to in to my room to warm up. |

Name: Isaak Jones Class: 2013 Major: Biochemistry Involvement: St. John's EMT Squad, Pre-Med Club, Special Olympics Bowling, Special Olympics Swimming I became an OL because... As senior year approaches, I find myself reflecting on all the positive things Saint John's has done for me during my first three years. When the opportunity arose to become an Orientation Leader, I immediately sought it out in order to come full circle in my college experience. As a current third year student, I have a desire to welcome in the new students with a wealth of energy, humor, and especially-advice. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Isaak be nimble, Isaak be quick. Isaak...don't run into the candlestick. We've all done stupid (and funny) stuff that we might regret at the time, but are always funny look back at and laugh at. I'm sure I'm 'above average' when it comes to things like this. Memorable College Experience: On a random snow day during my first year, a group of us decided to use a huge vinyl-covered mattress (and whatever else we could find) as sledding material to celebrate the snow day. We dragged them all the way from Fourth Floor Tommy down to the hill overlooking Gemini. After lumbering through the snow filled parking lots, streets and woods for two hours on the way to the hill we found out the mattress wouldn't even slide five feet down the hill. At the same time we also realized we had to carry it all the way back and we were all too cold and wet to even want to sled anymore. To our surprise we got several comments from random employees and adults on campus on our way back to Tommy Hall that went something along the lines of "So YOU were the crazy kids dragging that mattress across campus!" Let's just say it ended up being an entertaining conversation with our FR and Life Safety Services. |

Those first three days for first years before classes start can be the most fun, exciting, frightening, satisfying, exhilarating, intimidating, and rewarding days of your college experience. I want to be a part of those positive experiences and be there to show first years how all their worries can be put aside because the csb/sju COMMUNITY offers so many ways to make your college experience amazing. I have made life-long friends here at CSB/SJU. I will not be as successful if they were not here for me. Memorable College Experience: Power Shift Conference--- A group of CSB/SJU students attended an environmental conference in Washington D.C. This Little Piggy? Not really for any particular reason, but because it was my favorite rhyme as a child. Memorable College Experience: It's really difficult to pick just one really memorable college experience. I guess, if I had to pick, I think the most memorable experience would be becoming a part of the traditions of this school. I enjoy being on this committee because it give me a chance to open up opportunities for my peers to deepen their understanding of leadership in the workplace. I became an OL because... I want to help first years adapt to this new lifestyle they will be experiencing for the next 4 years of their life. I want to exemplify the qualities of a Johnnie/Bennie to the best of my ability. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? "Collin's Courageous Candy Cane" - It would be called this mainly because Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, and because I think alliteration is catchy! Memorable College Experience: Winning the MIAC Conference Championship in the Spring of 2011. I performed very well personally and our team came together when we needed to most. We edged out Hamline by 4 points, which in track and field is the difference of 1 place in any event... It was close to say the least. |

Name: John Loonan Class: 2013 Major: Economics Involvement: I am involved in track and field at Saint John's. I became an OL because... When I was a first year, I was showed a lot of respect by upperclassmen and it meant a lot to me when I would ride the link or pass someone in the Quad and they would say hello to me. I want to get to know as many first years as possible so I can start them off on a positive experience at Saint John's and show them what it means to be a Johnnie. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Father Goose. I like to take under classmen under my wing and sort of be that father figure to them when they are away from home. I protect them and stick up for them because I am a big man with a soft heart. Memorable College Experience: Studying abroad in the Fall of 2011. It was a great experience in Ireland where I met a lot of people and made a lot of memories. |

Name: Kevin Jirik Class: 2014 Major: Accounting Involvement: Accounting Club, Johnball Club; Intramural volleyball, dodgeball; ILCP, trail running, weight lifting, Zumba, Alcuin Library Circulation Desk (2011-2012) , Refectory Caterer (2010-2011) I became an OL because... Of the amount of pride and spirit I have for CSB/SJU. That I want to help first-year students get a great welcoming and get them ready to embrace the CSB/SJU community. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? The little Johnnie that sets big goals! Why? Because if I tell myself I want to do something and I give it my all! I may not end up where I was planning but I at least knew I gave it my all! Even if I fell short of my goal, I still gain friendships and experience from it all. Memorable College Experience: It was the last home football game of the 2011 season against St. Olaf (ranked 19th). The Rat Pak was going to be short a few members that day so they sent out a message to a few loyal fans that follow them on Facebook and get all decked out for the games to help lead the cheers. I was one of those selected. We are doing cheers and having a good time and then finally it gets down to the end of the fourth quarter. We needed a field goal to win the game! I end up putting one of the senior's from the Rat Pak on my shoulders as we try to pump up the crowd! I'm here holding him on my shoulders for a good five minutes as we are cheering and watching in suspense. With five seconds left on the clock we nail a 25 yard field goal to win the game! We charged the field and kept on cheering and chanting at the fifty yard line. That was a memorable college experience. |

Name: James McLean Class: 2014 Major: English Involvement: I am on the Cross Country and Track and Field Team. I also have a rad Talk Show with a Co-anchor whose voice soars like an Eagle. I became an OL because... The first three days of school can be tough and I want to help make it a little easier and a little more fun. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Once Upon a Bowl-Cut. My bowl-cut as a youngster was out of this world. Memorable College Experience: Winning the Track and Field Conference Meet last year; also late night swims. Name: Ethan Mustonen Class: 2014 Major: Economics, Political Science Involvement: I am involved with the Economics Club, College Republicans, ILCP, and Intramurals Sports!! I became an OL because... I became an OL because I want to be a part of incoming first years' first couple days! The first couple days are the scariest, but I want to make people feel comfortable here at CSB/SJU. I put it upon myself to make the first couple days fun and exciting, as well as facilitate meeting new people. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? It would probably be Humpty Dumpty. I can be a little injury prone. I have been known to have my share of falls and break things, but I have been lucky enough that the doctors can always put me back together so far! Memorable College Experience: How do I narrow it down to just one? Some of my most memorable experiences so far include snowball fights on the Tundra, getting lost in the Arboretum in the middle of the night, and winning back-to-back championships in intramural dodgeball! |

Name: Alex Betley Class: 2015 Major: History, Writing Minor Involvement: Men's Basketball, Men's Spirituality Group, OLTA, Student Representative to the St. John's Board of Regents Resource Development Committee, Extending the LINK I became an OL because: I wanted to give back to the orientation process in a leadership role. Beginning college can be a weird and awkward time for many students. New students are concerned with their impressions on others, how they are perceived, and where they will fit in at the college level. My hope as an OL is that I will be able to help smooth over the transition into college life, and show the new first-years that no matter what their personality is like, there is a niche for them in the CSB/SJU community. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? "Chill," because I tend to do too much of it. Memorable college experience: I would have to say going 0-6-1 in intramural softball has been fairly instrumental in my college career thus far. Although both teams forfeited the game due to a lack of players, that one tie tacked on at the end there was all Team Escalator needed to keep on keeping on. As all-star shortstop Devin Nanik remarked, "I would have made the game, but I ran out of eye black." |

Name: Craig Gemmill Class: 2015 Major: Undecided Involvement: I am a member of Men's Choir and the improv group Attention Starved Children. I also am a Eucharistic Minister at SJU. When I can, I love to join in with anything going on with my floor! I became an OL because... I want to help make the transition into the CSB|SJU community for the first-years as easy as it was made for me by my OL leaders. I had a great time during Orientation! I know that as an OL I can pass on the love for this place to the incoming first-years. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? I think the title of my nursery rhyme would be close to the story of "Old King Cole" but because my name isn't Cole and because am I not that old... my rhyme would be called "Young King Craig". I'm 98% sure there's a castle somewhere over in Europe with my last name on it, so I'm probably full of royal blood, right? Either way, this nursery rhyme of my life would be overly thrilling - it'll be a best seller before it is even published...maybe... Memorable College Experience: I have had a lot of memorable experiences thus far in college. One includes having performed in a few shows with Attention Starved Children (and the fact that I am actually in the group!) A few others include my Orientation weekend, singing with Men's Choir, and seeing other groups come to campus to perform! (from the famous Westminster Cathedral Choir to the less well known Guante) |

I feel that I can make a difference and inspire first years to become involved members of the CSB/SJU community. I also like to mentor younger students and help them succeed. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? If my life was a nursery rhyme it would be Pop Goes the Weasel because I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Memorable College Experience: My most memorable college experiences occurred when I was studying abroad in Ireland this fall. Meeting all sorts of new people who have become my best friends and traveling around Europe and Ireland with them has been so much fun. I have learned so much along the way and highly recommend it! |

Name: Jacob Helmer Class: 2014 Major: Integrative Health Science, Pre-Med Involvement: I am president of the SJU lacrosse club, member of RedGage, and I work for the SJU football team as a student medical assistant. I became an OL because... I want to provide a great orientation experience like the one I had when I was a first-year. I also want to give back to this awesome community at CSB|SJU that I have fell in love with over the past two years. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Jack be Nimble because I am nimble and quick! Memorable College Experience: My first lacrosse season when we beat Saint Thomas for the conference championship game and also First Year Orientation. |

Name: Rob Spiczka Class: 2013 Major: Communication Involvement: I am involved in many intramural sports on campus all year round. I am also am involved in the communication club. Recently the AKS service sorority asked me to MC the relay for life and tell my personal story, which I have agreed to do. I became an OL because... I became an OL because I want to help ease the transition from high school to college for the first years. I remember I was very nervous coming into college and I appreciated the help that the OL leaders provided me with. I want to be a person that the first years can look up to and have fun with while teaching them a lot of useful lessons. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? If my life was a nursery rhyme it would be called the "The engine that could." I have undergone a lot of adversity in my four years at CSB/SJU, and have never given up. I was diagnosed with cancer sophomore year, which really caught me off guard. I never let this situation get the best of me, I put my head down and got through it so that I could finish school and get my degree. Memorable College Experience: One of my most memorable college experiences was just this spring. I had my classes cancelled on a Friday so I went over to my friend's house and a bunch of us sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. It was a very fun and relaxing Friday that I will never forget. |

Name: Silvio Zabala Class: 2014 Major: Psychology Involvement: I am involved in the Intercultural LEAD Fellowship and the SJU rugby club sport. I became an OL because... Besides the obvious fact that being an OL is super fun, I thought it will give me a valuable experience on working with people and in a group. I enjoy interacting and meeting with people. I am excited for the whole process and the ILCP classes I will have to take. I know being an OL will truly make me grow as a person in so many aspects. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? If my life was a nursery rhyme it will be called "Three Places" because I have lived in three places my entire life and each place that I have lived in, has help me become who I am today. Puerto Rico/New York City/Minnesota. Memorable College Experience: It is so hard to come up with the most memorable college experience for me since there is so many! One of my memorable college experiences would be having this thing my friends and I call "bro time" with all my guy close friends at least once a week where we all get together and do something like watch a show, movie, just meet and talk about everything or/but rarely play some sort of video game. Everybody in the room just having a healthy brotherly bonding time together and relieving the stress college, academia and other responsibilities brings you. |

Name: Thomas Brossart Class: 2014 Major: Hispanic Studies Involvement: I worked as a photographer for SJU Institutional Advancement, taking photos at sporting events and such. Avidly pursuing a championship in volleyball and/or soccer intramurals. I played rugby during my first year. Volunteer with the Prison Ministry Program. I'm in a Men's Spirituality Group. Play music with a group of friends in a group called Sweet Mary. I became an OL because... I heard all the cool kids were doing it. But really, they are. So that, and because I remember how helpful my OL's were in showing me around campus, and just helping make my transition to college so awesome. St. Bens and St. John's have a lot to offer but it's too easy to sit back and waste time. I think a big part of being an OL is showing the new Bennies and Johnnies just how exciting college is and try and get them involved early so they don't waste any of their four years. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? London Bridge is Falling Down. Cause I love Fergie! Memorable College Experience: Cloud Cult playing in Brother Willies Pub. Best live show I've ever seen, and it was the perfect setting for a Cloud Cult show. Oh and seeing Professor Bresnahan working in the pottery studio is an experience. The man is a master potter and I'm pretty sure he uses magic when he works with the clay. People like Professor Bresnahan make CSB/SJU so unique. |

Name: Preston Hardy Class: 2014 Major: Math and Computer Science Involvement: Praise in the Pub, Unified Basketball Team, Kids Against Hunger/Feed My Starving Children, and Men's Chicago Service Trip I became an OL because... I try to ask not what SJU can do for me, but what I can do for SJU! If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? "The Acrobatics of Mathematics: the ins, outs, ups, down, flips and tricks of Math." Okay my life isn't COMPLETELY about math, but basically it is. Memorable College Experience: Trip to the Boundary Waters last summer with 6 friends that I met at CSBSJU. |

Name: Adam Kunkel Class: 2014 Major: Accounting and Finance Involvement: You can see me running around like a goof on the Johnball field, yelling something at the bus stop about the Students for the Advancement of People with DIFFERbilities, and sitting quietly with the gentlemen at MCF-St. Cloud with the Prison Ministry team. I became an OL because... The first impression of CSB/SJU is incredibly important. If I can make that positive and fun, it can be a big deal for our first-time students. If your life was a nursery rhyme, what would it be called? Why? Adam Kunkel and the Three Bears. It would be just like Goldilocks, except instead of a cottage it would be a dorm room, and instead of porridge it would be my friend's Mountain Dew. And instead of my friends scaring me away at the end, I would wake up from my nap, we would have high-five and enjoy our friendship. Memorable College Experience: One night we were trying to come up with things to do, so my friend Funky suggested a game called "tolf". Essentially, its just Golf with a tennis ball. I'm not sure if its allowed, but we walked all over campus in the middle of the night and played a pick-up game of tolf. It was just a good-hearted fun time. |

Why? Pat Sneak Attack Piggy Back Memorable College Experience: Being an R.A. on Third Mary for the 2010-11 school year. I had an awesome time building community with a great group of guys. |
