Photo Contest

Each semester the Office for Education Abroad sponsors a study abroad photo contest entitled "Johnnies and Bennies around the World" (co-sponsored by the Admission Office) for all students who have studied abroad.

The Spring 2012 Winner:

1st Place People's Choice: Katie Cossette, Greco-Roman, Fall 2012
Photo Name: "Into the Sunset"
Description: This photo was taken on the island of Santorini. Santorini was my favorite destination of my time in Greece, and it ended off right with this breathtaking sunset and the ship riding off into the sunset.

2nd Place: Thomas O'Laughlin, Galway Ireland, Fall 2011
Photo Name: "Teach Me Teach You"
Description: Antonia, an impossibly energetic local Irish girl, visits our cottages after school to play. We were frequently visited by her, along with various other local relatives of the Foyle's. It is truly amazing how much you can learn from interacting with children from a different culture. I feel extremely fortunate to have had this opportunity (you know, just minus the rocks they occasionally threw at us). Pictured here with her is SJU student Billy Jaffee.

3rd Place: Kylie Stanfield, Chile, Fall 2011
Photo Name: "San Pedro de Atacama"
Description: This photo was taken in San Pedro de Atacama in Northern Chile. It is the driest desert in the world and it was such an amazing place. It seemed so detached from the modern world and our group had a blast exploring this unique place.

4th Place: Rachel Mathwig, Japan, Fall 2011
Photo Name: "Beatles Reunion at Miyajima"
Description: The Beatles reunion during low tide at Miyajima Island during our last excursion of our study abroad. Only during low tide are people able to walk across and up close to the famous Tori gate at this shrine, otherwise during high tide it is bound by water, unreachable by foot. It is considered one of the most beautiful spots in Japan, and being able to be there up close to it we saw why, and it gave us a greater affinity with the Japanese cultures close ties with nature and the beauty of their country.
