Photo Contest

Each semester the Office for Education Abroad sponsors a study abroad photo contest entitled "Johnnies and Bennies Around the World" (co-sponsored by the Admission Office) for all students who have studied abroad.

NEW this year, a prize will be awarded for the Best group shot of at least 4 or more CSB/SJU students showcasing their time abroad.  CSB/SJU is looking for photos that are beyond your typical group shot of Bennies and Johnnies smiling and standing in rows.  CSB/SJU want photos that displays your study abroad program in an unique way.  This may include using great landmarks, showing off CSB/SJU apparel, so look at your photos you took while abroad and make sure to enter with your BEST group shot!  For other submission information, read below.

FAQ

  • WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? Great prizes! And the opportunity to display your creative work while promoting study abroad.
  • WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE PHOTOS APPEAR? Photos will be displayed on our Web site and will be part of an international study exhibit on the CSB/SJU campuses. In addition, the colleges use them for general publications and for the international study brochure. They could be used on the Web and in advertisements. By submitting the photos you are giving us permission to use them.
  • I HAVE SOME GREAT SHOTS THAT DON'T HAVE CSB/SJU STUDENTS IN THEM. SHOULD I SUBMIT THEM? Yes. However, we generally prefer photos that include CSB/SJU students.
  • HOW MANY SHOULD I SUBMIT? As many as you like, but try and pick out your best photos for submission. Remember that you need to complete a submission for EACH photo.
  • WILL I BE CREDITED FOR THE PHOTO IF IT IS USED? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. We do keep your name attached to our digital file, but not all brochures are set up to provide the photography credit.

The Fall 2012 Winners:

1st Place People's Choice: Nicola Franta, Guatemala, Spring 2013
Photo Name: "Flexibility"
Description:  Study abroad helps you learn a lot about yourself and others. My experience in Guatemala taught me how to become accustomed to culture norms that were foreign to me. When you live in a third world country that speaks a different language, has more stray dogs than you can keep track of, and has no water filtration system implemented, you learn to be flexible. Flexibility is an important characteristic because it helps you survive.

This picture was taken during a hike up Santa María, a volcano located about 30 minutes outside of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.

2nd Place: Bobby Fischer, South Africa, Spring 2012
Photo Name: "Green Eggs and Ham"
Description: After building a reading area for the students at Pendla Primary School, we spent time each day reading with the students there. I happened to be reading the kids one of their favorites, Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.

3rd Place: Aaron Haworth, Greco-Roman 2012
Photo Name: "Athenian Sunrise"
Description: This experience abroad is the greatest journey I have ever undertaken, and my drive for adventure is endless. I don't want to miss out on anything. Yeah, waking up when it's still dark outside and taking a half hour hike to the top of a rocky outcropping instead of sleeping in might not seem worthwhile to many people, but I wasn't going to waste my opportunity to see such unique beauty. And what a beauty it was.

Best Group Shot: Lucas Wald, Galapagos Islands & Ecuador Summer Biology 2012
Photo Name: "Becoming One with the Rainforest"
Description: We learned a lot of how each of the wide variety of plants in the rainforest can be used to cure a cut or simple be used to make face-paint.
