Taylor Schmidt
Taylor Schmidt is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Galway, Ireland.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
One specific cultural experience that wasn't necessarily a good experience but yet one that definitely sticks out in my mind was when we were taking a tour of Derry which is in Northern Ireland. With all the conflicts that Northern Ireland has, I was already kind of on pins and needles just being there. However, when we were taking a walking tour some teenage kids walked by and threw fireworks at our group. They weren't the kind that created fire or anything but they still exploded and made a very loud noise. Our tour guide felt really bad and apologized and made sure to tell us over and over again that Derry really is a safe place. I'm sure it is safer than what it used to be but the experience was definitely frightening and an eye-opener.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad in order to grow as a person and to also learn the host culture. I knew when applying for study abroad that I was a shy and more introverted person. I knew that I would like a program where I could be independent and have freedom but also have some guidance by having a director and being in a country where they spoke English. The Galway, Ireland program was a perfect fit for me. I grew so much as a person and learning the culture of Ireland was one of the best experiences I have ever had.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I would describe the study abroad experience as being a once in a lifetime opportunity. There really is no other experience where you get to learn another culture while living in it and also getting an education. Study abroad was definitely the highlight of my college career; without it, the college experience would not be the same.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I have grown so much more independent and have come out of my shell. After completing this experience, I now have no problem going up to a complete stranger and asking them a question. I feel that I have grown up so much because I now know that I can get around by myself and I don't necessarily need anybody's help. Overall, I just feel like I have matured.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Go out of your comfort zone. The only way to truly learn another culture is to put yourself in a situation where you are uncomfortable. Not risky or dangerous but just in a situation where you are almost forced to do something you've never done before. By doing this, the end result of study abroad is so much more meaningful and you will feel so good about yourself.
