Sarah Manzey
Sarah Manzey is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Guatemala.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Wow... there are so many that it is hard to choose. It was very emotional going into the indigenous schools around Xela and really feeling lucky for all of the educational experiences we have in the United States. We were able to play games and interact with the children and they even taught us some words of their indigenous language. The kids are SO excited to be at school and it was great to see that enthusiasm and it really made me impress upon kids when I got back how lucky they are for their opportunities compared to what some children have in other countries.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad because I really wanted to experience something out of my comfort zone and I also wanted to finish my Hispanic Studies major. The only way I could do that was to study abroad. It was also a really great opportunity for me to focus on Spanish, while I had focused on my other degree the other two years of college. I chose Guatemala because it is filled with such culture and because of the one on one intensive lessons that were offered through Celas Maya.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I would describe my experience as the best choice that an individual could make. To go to Guatemala, a student really has to be willing to take a step out their comfort zone... but it is ABSOLUTELY worth it! There are so many positive parts of every study abroad program and it is worth taking out an extra loan or maybe taking a heavier credit load senior/sophomore year in order to fit in a study abroad. I would also tell them that it really helps you develop as a person and helps you develop traits and friendships that you will continue throughout your academic career at CSB|SJU and also with individuals in the country you decide to visit.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
This trip has completed changed my outlook on life. I feel that I am more open minded to change and to different cultures. I was able to stay in a host family, so I feel like that experience really made me part of two families around the world, not just my own. I have learned what the conditions are like in this third world country and the things we take for granted everyday in the United States such as safety, clean water, and clean food. I am also more confident and outgoing after the experience. I went with a total group of strangers and in a short period of time we became amazingly close, which was an incredible thing to experience.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Don't be afraid to meet new people or to visit with natives in the country... you learn a different perspective about the country than you would in the classroom. Be careful. But don't be afraid to have new experiences. Don't let the fear of a new location hold you back. But it really is important to be aware of your surroundings and watch your alcohol intake. Take time to get to know your host family if that is an option in your program. Make a list of the places you want to visit early in the program and GO THERE! Time will go by way too fast and 4 months will pass before you know it! Do keep in contact with your family by emails and phone calls, but don't sit in an internet cafe for 5 hours a day, every day because you are missing out on your own experience.
