Rhiannon LeGarde

Rhiannon LeGarde is an ambassador who studied abroad in Chile.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

My host family took me on a vacation. It was the first time that I was spending days straight with only native Chileans. It was such an experience to be able to live exactly how they live. It really taught me to be open minded and to try new things.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I really wanted to improve my language skills. We learn a lot of grammar, reading and writing in class but in order to become better at speaking and listening I chose to go abroad. I also wanted to learn about a different culture. I chose Chile because of the Spanish language, the beautiful and diverse landscape and the fall semester worked great in my schedule.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It was a fantastic experience that was a lot of fun and helped me grow into the person I am today. My experience has pushed me to learn so much about myself and about other cultures.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I grew up a lot during the trip. I became more independent and confident in my abilities to support myself. I also became more culturally aware of not only my host country but of the United States as well. I learned that I can pick and choose things I like from both cultures to incorporate into my life.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Go in with an open mind and ready to engage in the new culture. There is no way of possibly knowing of the great adventure you are about to embark on so just take in the experience as it comes. It will go by fast!
