Rhebekkah Westre

Rhebekkah Westre is an Ambassador who studied abroad in India.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

I had an opportunity to visit a village in rural India. I was working on a project for solar lanterns and it made the situation much more realistic. Understanding the impact of light in the pitch black was really what flipped the switch for me. The people who had absolutely nothing showed me such great hospitality. We didn't speak the same language but we were still able to communicate. I never felt so welcomed. They gave me everything they had. I had the chance to observe a different part of the culture that I was seeing. I loved the village and I loved my experience that I had.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I wanted to study abroad to push myself out of my comfort zone. I also wanted to be totally immersed in a different culture.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

I would say it was one of the most bumpy roller coasters of my life. I had several highs and several lows during the experience. In the end, it is a life defining experience and it made me change for the better. I loved the challenge the trip presented me. Every day was a challenge but I wouldn't have it any other way

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

It has definitely made me a much more confident person. I feel that I have a greater understanding of my own culture and how I fit into this big world. By doing service learning, I realized I'm truly the happiest when I am helping people and I want to do it for the rest of my life. I realized I have become more independent and self-reliant. I also know that flexibility is key to life and it leads to living a much happier life.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

I think number one is have fun. Enjoy the new culture and experiences that await you. No day is ever the same and live in the moment. Take every chance to be with the locals because that's where the true beauty is of the country.
