Rachel Bierschbach

Rachel is an Ambassador who studied abroad in London

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

One of the many reasons I choose to attend CSB/SJU was their Study Abroad Program. Traveling being one of my biggest desires and passions I knew I wanted to study abroad while in college. Living in St. Cloud my entire life, I choose London because it is so different from St. Cloud, MN. London having a large population, a multicultural city and a city of many languages it was the perfect fit. Being a management major the internship opportunity was a huge benefit and positively affected my study abroad experience.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

One of the most amazing experiences I participated in while abroad was a group excursion with my Islam and the West class. This class offered a excursion to Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul was very different than any place I had ever visited before. We were given the opportunity to visit mosques and bazaars, try amazing food, take a turkish bath and experience the culture. Istanbul was a beautiful city and an experience that changed my life.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Studying abroad gave me the chance to learn about myself and who I want to be. It gave me a chance step out of your comfort zone and take risks. Studying abroad has taught me to be spontaneous and enjoy life! Studying abroad was an amazing experience with people I will never forget!

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

The trip has made me a more global and open person. I am now more interested and aware about what is happening around the world. I have become more independent and have become more mature. Studying abroad, has taught me who I am and what I want to achieve during my life.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

My first piece of advice is to immerse yourself into the culture as much as you can. Try to meet new people because they just might become your new best friends! Try an internship in a foreign country where you are able to meet the locals! And last but not least have fun and take risks!
