Molly is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I have always loved to Travel and planned to go to Australia sometime in High School. Most of my faculty and friends didn't think that Australia was that great of a "cultural" experience but I learned so much about differences in individuals while I was abroad. The country is beautiful and while abroad, I was challenged to try new things that I would never have thought possible.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
During the Australia Abroad Program, students camp in the outback with native aboriginals for about a week. During our camp out, I ate a honey ant, a grub and a goanna. My family didn't believe I ate any of them until I showed them the pictures. The experience was a great combination in learning about a different culture and expanding my comfort zone.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My Study Abroad experience was amazing. Not only did I get to know my fellow Bennies and Johnnies but I met other American students in addition to Australian students. It was a special experience to be surrounded by a new culture with both familiar friends and new ones. I think that most of my time in Australia was spent in awe of the quirky town that was vibrant in Australian history.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Study Abroad was both a relaxing and challenging experience. I choose not to seek employment while abroad and was able to spend time exploring my surrounding culture. The classes in Australia were more challenging than what I expected, but they were a good experience for me to learn how to manage my time and adjust to different expectations. It also pushed me to meet other international students who lived in the same Residential Hall.
What advice can you offer for CSB|SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Study abroad where you want to study. Each program is different and offers a different experience. Some are more expensive than others and some may have classes you are more interested in taking. The biggest factor to deciding where to study should be a place you might not have considered visiting on your own. You will find your experience so rewarding no matter where you choose to travel, so choose somewhere outside your comfort zone!
