Molly Deml
Molly Deml is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Greece and Rome.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
When my boyfriend and I were traveling during the one week break between the two sites, we were in Vienna, Austria, and stopped in a cafe for coffee. We didn't have enough money with us to pay for dinner, but two old men in the cafe bought us dinner and dessert because they knew we were cold, tired, and confused. We didn't speak each other's languages, but we understood each other completely. It reminded me of the underlying goodness in people and that we really are all the same, no matter where we come from.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to experience new cultures and worldviews. I have always wanted to go to both Italy and Greece so I decided that this program would give me the best opportunities and experiences.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
As I said before, studying abroad was the most challenging, stressful, liberating, and exciting experience of my life. Every day was an adventure - you never knew what to expect or where you would end up. That can be exhausting and scary, but if you embrace it, you will find exciting things and new experiences everywhere.
A piece of advice - make sure that you are 100% committed to going abroad. I wanted this trip more that I've wanted anything in my whole life, and that is the attitude you need when going in because otherwise everything is going to be a whole lot harder.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
Studying abroad was the most challenging, stressful, liberating, and exciting experience of my life. I have definitely been bit by the traveling bug and cannot wait to go on my next adventure. I have become much more confident in myself, my independence, and my ability to handle whatever life throws at me. I have also become more tolerant and respectful of other cultures, which is extremely important in a globalized society.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Pack light. Be brave. Don't stress over the little things. For girls, bring a guy with you when you go out at night. For guys, make sure the girls on your trip know that you have their back. Support each other through the tough times. Bring a video camera. Trust your gut instinct. Be respectful of everyone and everything, even if you don't understand or agree. Stay positive. Don't let classes stress you out. And especially, don't be afraid to ask for directions or a hug if you need them.
