Missy Shelendich

Missy Shelendich is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Rome and Greece.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

In Greece we were invited a family's olive grove. A group of us helped a local family harvest olives to make olive oil, share a lunch, and engage in Greek culture.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

When I chose CSBSJU I knew I wanted to study abroad somewhere. I looked into many trips and realized I couldn't pick just one country. I decided to study abroad in Italy and Greece. I always wanted to see southern Europe and to immerse myself into a foreign culture.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

You will be put into new situations and have to adapt, go with the flow, and find your way, it will all be worth it. It's difficult to describe four amazing months in words, but I can say I shared so many laughs, with a group of people who became family, as we found our way throughout the world.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I now have a passion for learning about other cultures. I want to experience as many new places and faces as I can throughout my life. My trip introduced me to many great people and places. Also, I am much more independent and willing to be in new places without fear of the unknown.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

The time goes by so much, before you know it you are packing up to go home. During the trip you will experience hard times, but everything will be worth it. You will learn from every experience. Make the most out of the time, do as many activities as possible, visit places you never thought you would, and don't be afraid to ask locals questions even if you don't speak the language.
