Michelle McFarlane is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Spain

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Living with a host family was a wonderful experience. My favorite interaction with my host family occurred during dinner. It was one of the first few weeks I was in Spain and even though there was a little bit of a language barrier, they still welcomed me into their family and made me feel like I was one of their own. It was so nice to see how kind and welcoming they were. Their kindness was so heartwarming and it has stuck with me. Seeing how they welcomed me in even though I was different from them really made a lasting impression on me.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I wanted the experience of living in a different culture and to broaden my perspectives of the world. I also wanted to improve my Spanish language skills, specifically my speaking and comprehension.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It was the most amazing experience of my life. Living in a different country and experiencing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities was indescribable. It was hands-down the best decision I ever made and I would go back in a heartbeat. The experience of living in a new culture really forced me to learn about myself and who I want to become. There is no other experience like this and I highly encourage everyone to seize this experience while they can.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

After having completed this experience I think I have a better understanding of who I am as a person and who I want to be. I have matured a great deal and can relate to others who are different from me with a better understanding of where they are coming from. This experience has prepared me to deal with many situations and to be flexible and problem solve in many different environments.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Cherish every moment during your time abroad. Don't be afraid to expand your horizons and get outside your comfort zone.
