Megan Schutz
Megan Schutz is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
The Broome trip that every student partakes in was the biggest cultural experience of the trip. We spent a week with an Aboriginal family and it really allowed me to get to know the native culture in a whole new way that I had never experienced on a daily basis while living in Australia. The Aboriginal culture is very open to sharing their personal stories of their culture and teaching us their traditions.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad because of the great opportunities that it provided. I wanted to explore another country, build friendships, and become more independent. I choose Australia because it seemed to have the most outdoor adventure. I wanted to do a lot of activities outside such as surf, snorkel, hike, bike, swim, and a whole lot more.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
It is a great experience, and I cannot describe the entire experience is this short amount of space. But, I do encourage every individual to go abroad if they have the opportunity. It does not matter what country they choose, just go. The abroad experience is extraordinary and we do not have this awesome opportunity on a daily basis. Do not let anything back home hold you back, because the experience of being abroad is a once in a life time opportunity.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I have become more independent. By planning this trip, it really teaches you how to be organized, and on top of things. I have also learned to do things for myself and not other people. The trip taught me to be myself. The study abroad trip really taught me to grow as a person. It taught me to branch out and meet new friends. Our study abroad group became really close to one another.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Do everything you can. Do not let anything hold you back. Conquer your fears. Be adventurous. Try new things. Try new foods. Immerse yourself into the culture. Meet the locals. Meet new friends. Get to know each and every member of your group. Be organized. Pack light. And HAVE FUN!! It is a once in a life time opportunity!
