Megan Coleman

Megan Coleman is an ambassador who studied abroad in Greece and Rome.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

It is really hard to choose one experience but I have to say that in Athens I was fortunate enough to be presented with a unique opportunity being invited to watch Greece vs. Croatia soccer game with some Athenians. While I was in the stands with them, they taught me all of the cheers and showed me how to look like a true Greek fan. I will never forget that game and the friendships that I made there have carried on to America- one of the girls is actually coming to visit me this summer!

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

To be completely honest I chose the Greco/Roman program because of my twin sister, Caitlin. I originally had no idea as to where I wanted to go, I just knew that the world was out there waiting for me! So when she gave me her list- such as the attraction she felt from both cultures and the history of both cities- I, myself thought that this unique program could be something for me as well.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Going abroad to Greece and Italy was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. During my time in both countries I was able to learn about the two cultures and about myself. I have made great friendships with my fellow abroad group and with my director. By experiencing both cultures I was able to get study abroad trips into one! If you are on the fence at all about going- take a leap and go, you won't be disappointed.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I can now say that I am definitely more confident, self-assured, and culturally conscious. I have grown a deeper appreciation for my family and the American way of life. I have made some lifelong friendships with my fellow abroad peers and , as I mentioned above, I have made great friendships with some international students as well.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

There are many opportunities that are presented to us during our life. The problem is when to know which choice is the best for you. If the choice is between going abroad or not; take into consideration the benefits of going. Those that have studied abroad don't exaggerate when they say it was one of the best times of their lives so my advice is to reflect upon yourself and to choose a program; all of the programs offered through our school are each unique but the same outcome is achieved. Each student experiences a semester with great friends and great opportunities that they will remember for the rest of their life!
