Mattie Ernst

Mattie Ernst is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Cork, Ireland.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

I don't think there is one specific memory that stands out for me, but every Tuesday for a couple months I would go to a session in a small pub and play Irish music. I loved the people who played there, though there were very few young people. The old musicians had such character and joy when they were playing the tunes, and they were delighted that young people had an interest in learning the music. Though I was foreign and much younger than most, I still felt accepted there.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I chose to study abroad to gain a wider understanding of the lifestyle, ideals, and beliefs of another culture. I chose the Cork program 1) because I had already been involved in the Irish community here in MN, and 2) because the program is very independent. I liked that I was able to take a variety of classes and get to know Irish students and other people that were not on my program.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

I loved the way this program just threw me into Cork! I wasn't huddled away, only seeing the other CSBSJU students. I was in Irish classes, I was meeting people in pubs, I was out on the town, I was hopelessly lost in the countryside, I tried not to be nervous, and just take every opportunity!!

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I don't know all the ways in which this trip affected me. I learned many things about myself, how I plan, how I work, how I relate to others. I definitely emerged with a broader world view. I see a news article or hear people talking in the bus line and think, "What would my Irish friends think about that?"

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

I would say, get out as much as you can. This is really the only program that works how it should. You have a great opportunity to meet people so join a club, or 2 or 3. Talk to old people in pubs. Get lost in the countryside. Get out of your safety net. Have fun.
