Mary Schmidt
Mary Schmidt is an Ambassador who studied abroad in London.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Throughout the semester, my love for the Royal Family was constantly questioned and debated about if they are really necessary anymore and if they are just symbolic. Being able to be in London for the Royal Wedding was a special moment because the Royal Family is such an important part of the British people's culture and history. To see millions of people gathering together to celebrate the occasion was really unique because nothing like that would happen in America. It was a great way to end my study abroad experience by seeing the nation coming together to celebrate who they are as a whole.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad because I knew it would be a once in a lifetime experience. With a CSB/SJU liberal arts education, it is important to learn about and embrace other cultures. I chose the London program for a variety of reasons:
1. I loved the idea of being in a big city which is incredible diverse from the people to the shows, museums, etc.
2. I am OBSESSED with the Royal Family and the rich history of the British monarchy. The years of politics, drama, celebrations, etc are an endless topic to learn about.
3. My sister and brother both participated in this same program so I have heard stories for years about how wonderful it is.
4. I was excited about all of the classes offered such as British Culture, Modern and Contemporary Art, and British Theatre.
5. Many, many, more reasons!!!!
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I could probably talk for days on end about how incredible my experience was studying in London. My experience in London allowed me to see and do things I have never done in my life. I was able to find ways to immerse myself in the culture through museums, shows (plays, musicals, ballet, comedy), movie premieres, art galleries, historical sites, concerts, and sporting events. London gave me a new and broader perspective on the world and my role in it. It was an experience I will treasure forever.
For 4 months, I was able to live with 23 other CSB/SJU students in London
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
The biggest affect has been being more globally aware. London is incredibly diverse with cultures represented from around the world. I am able to see how the way I live my life and view things can be different but how I need to continue to learn and respect the differences in the world. The world is much smaller than it seems and it is important to stay connected to it as a whole.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
See, Learn, Grow. Your Study Abroad experience will open your eyes to new and exciting things. Look for adventures and try new things. Make sure you open your mind to learning about the people, the places, the food, the history, the arts, the sports, etc. Be ready to grow as a person. These will be the most incredible months of your life and you will be changed. Be open to this change and your experience will be even more wonderful.
