Logan Schwinghammer

Logan Schwinghammer is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Spending almost a whole week with my CSB/SJU group camping in the Outback with an Aboriginal Australian family was quite eye-opening. Exploring their culture, spirituality and the perceptions of Australian history was quite intriguing and living on "Broome Time" as they called it, was quite soothing.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I wanted to study abroad to explore the world and experience life outside of the U.S. My brother also study abroad during his college years, and since he had such a spectacular time, I knew I wanted to go abroad as well. I chose Australia for its uniqueness in history, location, culture, and especially its wildlife. I also figured that it would be a lot harder to go to Australia than to go to Europe later in life.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

An amazing experience in so many ways that I hope to cherish forever. So many amazing memories, ridiculous experiences, and awesome friends that this was an extraordinary experience unlike anything I have ever been a part of.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

It has made me more independent, more outgoing, and more assertive in my personality and behavior. It has allowed me to face and to deal with a whole range of new experiences varying from traveling solo and with a group, to managing a budget in regards to food, items, and miscellaneous needs, to encountering new and diverse people unlike anyone I have met before. I also feel like a lot of challenges I have encountered recently to be less intimidating since studying abroad.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Explore as much as possible. You never know who you are going to meet or what you are going to do, but that is definitely a part of the adventure. Also, no matter what happens, do you best to relax and calm yourself; it will work out.
Also, a favorite saying of my group: YOLO
(you only live once)
