Lindsey Kane
Lindsey Kane is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Ireland-Cork
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
I got involved with the Iona society at UCC and one thing that Iona hosts every month is a culture night. This event allowed the international students to "bring a bit of home" to all of the new people they had met in Ireland. The first culture night was all about Ireland, but the night that sticks with me most is when we were allowed to host a "Minnesota Culture" night. It was so fun to be able to share the things we love most about home with our new friends.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
Coming in to college I knew that I wanted to study abroad and because of family ties, Ireland was one place I had always wanted to visit. Also, because I don't feel proficient enough in another language I knew that I wanted to go to an English speaking country. Deciding between Galway and Cork came down to which semester I could fit study abroad in.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I will always remember my study abroad experience as a time that I was able to not only learn in a new environment, but I was able to learn way more about myself and the world while making some of the best memories of my life. This experience will allow you to break out of your shell, figure out more about who you are as a person and have some fun in an amazing setting!
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I am now more confident to be independent and also not afraid to try new things. I was able to travel around Europe for three weeks without knowing how everything would work out, and I had the time of my life! I know that I can get through new experiences and that the majority of the new things I try are going to be positive experiences.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
One thing that I learned pretty quickly is that no matter how much you plan things out, it might not go according to those plans so be flexible. This is especially important if students decide to travel around. Another thing I learned while traveling around is that almost everyone you meet while traveling is in the same boat as you; you're all trying to make the most of your time on a budget and this can be a common factor that brings different people together.
