Laura Trent
Laura Trent is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Rome and Greece.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
While studying in Rome, I had the opportunity to witness a canonization mass of 6 saints at the Vatican, presided by Pope Benedict. It was absolutely amazing to see people from all over the world all there for a common purpose. We were, in a way, witnessing a bit of history in the making.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
The reason I wanted to study abroad was because I've have heard so many of my friends' stories or their experiences and travels and I wanted to have similar experiences. I also wanted to gain a greater world perspective. I had not been out of the country before studying abroad, so my global outlook and general knowledge grew a great deal thanks to a semester abroad.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
Honestly, there is no way to describe this past semester and I think many would agree. I'll just say it was an experience I would not have traded for anything. I would definitely encourage everyone to take the chance up and study abroad. For one, I think CSB/SJU has one of the best programs for semester long trips and secondly you get to see another side of the world and actually live and experience an unfamiliar culture.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
Living abroad for 4 months definitely will take an effect on your views. Upon returning I feel that I have a much great passion for life. I try not to take the little things for granted. I want to experience all that I can. I'm much more outgoing and willing to try new things.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Make the very most out of your trip. It's been said a hundred times, but I'll say it again. Allow yourself to be put in situations that put you out of your comfort zone! Although those experiences are intimidating, they make for the very best memories and allow you to make the most of your semester abroad.
