Kylie Stanfield

Kylie Stanfield is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Chile.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Volunteering at the Hogar Nino Amor, an orphanage, was the most difficult and most rewarding part of my entire semester. It was so hard to look beyond the cultural differences and get to know the kids. I miss them more than anything in Chile.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I wanted to study abroad to improve my spanish, experience another culture, and have the opportunity to travel. I chose Chile because I love the atmosphere of South America. I was in Peru in high school and loved it. I wanted to experience that again.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

DO IT! It is the best time in your life, don't put it off or say that you will travel later on in life. This experience was so much more than traveling. It is priceless and you will never, ever forget it. You also make some amazing friends both from CSB/SJU and from the host country.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

The trip made me a much more confident, outgoing, and independent person. I had to rely on myself more than any other time in my life. I grew so much as a person and now that I am back, I can see how these areas of personal growth have affected me.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

When you are abroad, do what you want to do. Don't wait for the other students in the group because you will run out of time... and fast!! Don't fall into what the group always does. Its your experience, your money, and your time so do what makes you happy and have no regrets.
