Kendria Kramer
Kendria Kramer is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
The Broome trip that the entire group takes was by far the best experience. It not only opened my eyes to the racism that there is in Australia, but the racism that there is all over the world. It made me realize what Australia used to be before Europeans took over, and what Australia has become through a long process.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I've known I wanted to study abroad since my first experience out of the country to Australia when I was 15. I traveled with People to People and it opened my eyes to the world. I am from a very small town and I have always known that I wanted to get out of Minnesota and out of the U.S. for an extended period of time to broaden my horizons. I loved my first Australia trip and the study abroad trip was on the opposite coast than what I had travelled the first time. I decided this would be a great opportunity for me to live in a country as beautiful as Australia.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
It is the trip of a lifetime. You actually get to take classes with Australian students, you are taught by Australian professors and if you're really lucky you will be living with a few Australian students. The classes talk about different things that I haven't talked about in any of my classes at CSB/SJU. The Broome experience is very eye opening and this is also a great opportunity to travel to other nearby countries.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I now know that I can make it on my own and I can truly do anything that I set my mind to. I have become a lot more open to different cultures and a lot more vocal of my opinions. Studying abroad has taught me different ways to communicate with other individuals and has opened a door for me for many other great opportunities.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Take advantage of everything. Every road trip, weekend trip, everything. Don't be afraid to try new things because you might look back and regret it. Take a step or two outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Make friends with the locals, it is the only way to make the most of your experience. Keep an open mind and be friendly to everyone you meet. Most of all have fun and be respectful of the country you are in!
