Kelsey Schmidt-Miller
Kelsey Schmidt-Miller is an Ambassador who studied abroad in China.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
This wasn't just one experience, but rather someting that happened quite often. It was amazing how hospitable ALL of the Chinese people were to myself and to everyone else in our group. They would bend over backwards for us. Many times it was unnecessary and we felt bad, but they were just expressing their values and we had accept.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I always knew I wanted to have the opportunity to be exposed to another culture. I choose China because it's a place where I never thought I would be comfortable going by myself. After this experience, however, I am confident that I would be able to get along just fine!
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I have no regrets, and that how we should live our life. It will be an adjustment from American standards, but everything is 100% worth it for the experience you walk away from. Also, when in China, don't hold back. Experience everything to its utmost and get to know/build relationship with the Chinese individuals.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I am more knowledgable about the Chinese culture and have been given the drive to experience many other cultures as well. I walk away from this experience with so many memories, and even better, Chinese friends who will be visiting America. I hope I can show them the same hospitality they provided me with. Lastly, I gained so much confidence in myself and know I can get through numerous situations, even if I can't always communicate perfectly.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Be willing to step out of your comfort level and don't hold back. You would experience everything if you do. Be open to new things and build relationships with Chinese friends. Be open to differences between the cultures and embrace every experience.
