Kelci Reiner

Kelci Reiner is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Guatemala

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

During the last week in Guatemala, holy week occurred. I, personally, am not very religious, but spending that week with my host family and attending several different parades and wood dustings was very impressionable for me. I was amazed at how much a very religious week could bring people together and create unity in a country that is still much divided after a 36 year civil war.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

Study abroad is mostly the reason I came to CSB|SJU. It has just been in my nature for some significant time! I chose Guatemala for the intensive Spanish immersion, indigenous culture and the host families!

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Very simply, it was hands down the best experience of my life. For those that are thinking about applying, JUST DO IT! It will be an experience you will never forget.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

With this study abroad being my 2nd long term study abroad (1st was AFS-Chile 2006-2007), I felt I was already so experienced with studying and living in a foreign country that has a different official language than English. I cannot begin to tell you how far off I was. This study abroad experience taught me about myself and the person I am, significantly improved my Spanish and taught me long term life lessons that have changed my life forever. The contacts I made in Guatemala with students from CSB|SJU, my host family, the teachers at CELAS Maya, and others in the community have completely changed my current way of life.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

My advice to future study abroad participants would be to do everything! As broad and cliche as it is, it is some imperative that each participant realizes the incredible experience that he/she has in front of him/her and takes full advantage of it! Remember, this includes everything from what might be served for lunch at your host families house to a weekend excursion with your group!
